Such a useful tool
I ordered the copper version of this a couple months ago, and it was a little unwieldy due to its weight and weak/slippery grip. Copper also tarnishes super fast and I just don't feel like taking it apart cleaning it every week lol. The titanium is much better, it's significantly and noticably lighter, lightly textured for a much better grip, and seems to be maintaining a really nice look. I keep it on a keychain, and it seems like keys scratch it or rub off on it, but I don't think that they're penetrating the finish. Some people complained about loose screws, so I checked mine right when I got it, and I couldn't even get them tighter, so they must have fixed that issue. The single downside that I'm aware of is that they don't make it for lefty's; and I'm not a lefty so it's not even an issue for me. Overall the knife is definitely made with extreme precision. It blade really had no wiggle room, and it slides in and out super smoothly. Definitely the type of high quality product that I expect from Ferrum Forge. I got mine in blue.

I have not; I'll comment when I do though. I have to go to the store today, so I'll see if I can pick some up.

Did you ever figure out which brand of blades work?

Hell Yeah, I like it.
I got mine last week. All the complaints are true. It's expensive, and the spring retractable blade can be a pain. It is really tiny and can be easy to lose. It must be a pain to change the blade. Now that all that is out of the way, here is the good. The retractable blade is very helpful for an adult with large hands trying to avoid over cutting. It is made of titanium, and NOTHING that is made from that material is cheap. It is easy to grip and allows for great versatility. The blade is seriously sharp, and extremely precise. the only tiny tools in this category are those deals with the break off blades, and they usually are not as ergonomic (even the one at Muji). If someone is into knives, they know that there is no single knife that does it all and they have numerous knives in their collection. That being said, it is a nice tool to round out a set of practical utilities in your arsenal if the price is not too much of a barrier.

I love how small and light the knife is. Here's what I feel would make this knife so much better. I can't comment on replacing the blade as I just got my delivery, but I would have liked a lock when the blade is fully extended. Of course, the retraction spring is needed so that the blade doesn't deploy in your pocket. However, I went to cut up a box just now and I had to apply a lot of pressure to keep the blade from retracting while cutting. A "notch" to keep the blade fully extended without pressure would be awesome. Once released from the "notch", the blade would spring back as it does now. Comments welcomed...

I just took apart the knife, put the copper pieces in a little solution of white vinegar and table salt, rubbed it with an old toothbrush, and it was almost like new in less than 2 minutes.

Small and very useful
I wasn't sure on the size but when it was delivered i was happy with its small size. It's small enough to fit in my keys. Its the same size as my largest key. The thumb button is the perfect size. I can grab my keys and grab the RUK and push the button to start cutting something. The blade is a perfect size for opening boxes, packages, food or anything that needs opening. I find it more useful than an actual knife because of the speed you can use it and put it away.

Great little knife, but doesn't use standard #11 blades.
I liked everything about this little thing for opening packages at home. I've had it for a while now (years) and the blade is finally getting dull enough to struggle with some cardboard. I ordered some cheap #11 blades and they didn't fit. So, I spend some more money and got some X-Acto brand #11 blades (thinking the cheapos were non-standard). The X-Acto blades didn't fit either. Turns out this spiffy little knife is non-standard. That takes away almost all of the usefulness of this knife. If I wanted to spend $50 on a compact knife to open packages without standard refill blades, there are thousands of better choices.

johnxy888Indeed. Like I said, such a great concept, built with great materials, but all made practically worthless by the non-standardized blade replacements.

Replacing blades are tougher than it should be...
For the first few months of having this blade it worked great but eventually I found I had to replace the blade. Trying to replace the blade is way tougher than you would think... The screws on my RUK were unreasonably tight and almost stripped the screws. When I did manage to get the screws off, I found that the X-Acto Blades I got would not fit because the slots were too short. I feel X-Acto are the most popular hobby knife replacements so it confuses me on why this choice was made... It shouldn't be this difficult to replace the blades.

  • #11 blades made by X-ACTO do NOT fit the knife - the opening is too small
  • uncomfortable to use - to keep the blade from retracting while in use, I need to pinch the knife more tightly than I usually would with my thumb on the side of the knife rather than the spine, which is more comfortable to me
  • Screws become loose and fall out just from being in my pocket
  • Anodization began to rub off from the very first carry

Decent after customization/learning
(I haven't used mine long enough to dull it and need to replace the blade, but I've used it enough times to figure out the basics of using it.) First of all, this thing is so small that it can be difficult to get a good, sure grip. A short lanyard definitely helps. I attached one that's about 80% the length of the RUK and it ends in some sort of lanyard knot. That makes it just the right length for my ring and pinky finger to grab onto and against the knot, for a more secure grip. Second, I figured out the technique for extending the blade. Instead of pressing down on the nub with the meat/pad of my thumb, then trying to slide the nub out, I slide my thumb nail in the groove and push the nub that way. With this technique I actually would prefer a stronger spring tension for better safety. Also, I can flip the RUK around to extend the blade with my index finger, if I want to cut in the other orientation (away from my body).

I'm giving it a 4 stars because it's nice and compact and high quality, but not as usable out of the box as my old screwpop utility knife.

Meh
I bought this because the reviews were very positive. I wanted a small and light weight utility/box knife with a blade that could be replaced. This is very small, very light weight, and has a blade that can be replaced. However, it's really small. The blade can be extended out by pushing and holding the level that pushes the blade forward. However, as soon as you release the blade retracts under spring tension. So, if you are wanting to do quite a bit of cutting you can't leave the blade open/deployed. This combined with the very small size makes it kind of awkward to use your thumb to overcome the spring to keep the blade out to cut. This would be great for having a small and extremely light knife in your pocket to occasionally cut open some tape on a box, but it's too small for any volume of cutting task.

I like this finish better than the original ones. Other than that, it's still the same tool, compact and handy, but it's annoying to replace the blade. So four stars again. And while I'd still like a full-size version that uses utility blades or Olfa blades, I recently picked up a Nitecore NTK10 for a good price which is pretty much what I had in mind. (And there's a tiny NTK05 out now which uses scalpel blades, hmm).
