No the clips were not “fine to begin with”. In their own words the “original clips bent easily”. I paid a premium price for a premium product. Now you tell me you can offer me something better than the original that was poorly engineered if I will pay for it and you are offering me a $10.00 coupon to cushion the blow or to use as subterfuge. Massdrop used to be a place that I could trust (emphasis on trust) to have the best quality at the best price and if it wasn’t they would make it right. I have spent thousands of dollars here, but with this charade, Massdrop just lost a good customer.

recardosiI am entirely in the same boast as you and the way this situation has been dealt with put into question whether I will be buying anything else from this site; the whole "re-engineering" process coupled to the fact that the clips are rebuyable through coupon is just outright insulting.

recardosiLet me preface by saying you're right, the clip sucked and I said as much from the first time I saw it. Actually, I believe my reaction was a genuine laugh: it seemed totally incongruous on an otherwise well-built knife. Nor am I trying to change your mind--I dont tell my own kid where or how to spend her $, so I'm certainly wouldn't presume to do that here. But if I read your post correctly, the problem with the crappy clip and Massdrop charging for a replacement is going to prompt you to disassociate from a retailer with whom you've been pleased otherwise, more or less. Again, I'm not saying that's a bad idea, but I wouldn't want you to make a decision to forgo something you generally like based upon a misapprehension, which is: The Falcon is not a "premium product", nor is its $125 cost a "premium price". $125 is nothing to sneeze at, I know, but it is a very reasonable price for a well-made production knife, which is what the Falcon is. There are hundreds of production knives that cost double and more; and beyond that level of cost and quality there are mid-tech and custom knives. For some of those $125 wouldn't be enough to cover a single one of a half-dozen payments. Most well-known companies that make production knives--Benchmade, Spyderco, etc.--guarantee them against defects in materials and workmanship, and will fix or replace knives and knife parts that are defective, but they make no promises that each and ŕevery component will be brilliantly engineered. And all or nearly all those companies specifically exempt pocket clips from their warranties. If one breaks you can usually mail it to the company for repair/replacement, but you will be charged for the parts and labor to fix the broken clip. So the point I'm making is that MD offering a redesigned replacement clip for $15 is an appropriate response, given the usual practices of the cutlery industry, and given the relative investment that the purchase of a $125 knife constitutes. One other angle to consider is that the Lynch and Hinderer after-market titanium clips on some of Spydercos amd ZTs cost between $20 and $50, so $15 isnt too bad. None of the preceding may make any difference to you, and that's just fine. As I said, my purpose wasnt to change your mind, simply to provide context for MD's handling of the situation.

HatuletohThanks for posting your thoughts. One thing I would like to point out is that while I did say I had spent thousands of $$$ here, I didn’t say that each experience had been as consistent or as good as they could have been. There had been a slow but steady decline in service and product/price advantage here for the past year or longer. Massdrop billed the Falcon as a premium product and it is proving to be less than that. This is just the icing on the cake for me.
