Product Description
Made with Focal’s brilliant engineering and extraordinary attention to detail, the Elex headphones take a fundamentally different approach to dynamic drivers—and deliver a better measured performance across the board than headphones several times their price. A refinement of the $1,000 Elear with elements of the $1,500 Clear, they boast several improvements to the sound, build, and aesthetic, too Read More
Before purchasing, please do your own research on these headphone. I wont deny that the sound quality and other aspects about this pair of headphones are great, but the big kicker is that the drivers will go out on you within one to two years and you will be past your warranty like me and DROP will not replace them. If you are within you warranty, Drop will replace it with no issue which is great, but i would not purchase them as it seems you have to get lucky to get a pair that will last.
If you search through reviews, you will see the fatal flaw with these headphones. One driver will just not work. The first pair I got came with only one driver working. So I returned them, and was sent a second pair. Worked great, sounded great, and now 3 years later... the right driver just died for no good reason. Worked fine the last time I listened, put them up, got them out again... no right driver. Not sure if this is an issue with all Focal headphones, or just these, but stay away. If you take a chance, hope they break within the 2 years of warranty, unlike mine, which are now very expensive paperweights. Or good if you only have hearing in one ear.
Compared to a K7XX:
Treble is sibilant, sharp ,fatiguing, even painful at times.
Bass in nearly non-existent.
Sound stage is minuscule and almost entirely in front of the listener with basically nothing to the sides, it's like auditory tunnel vision.
The "punch" or "slam" some reviewers have mentioned is more like a polite tap on the shoulder.
So uncomfortable they actually gave me a headache after less than an hour.
Really box though.
All this to say: make sure you're not an un-diagnosed bass head before buying these.
The left driver in my first pair of focal elex headphones died, and drop sent a replacement. Now the left driver in the replacement pair has died and they won't replace again because the original purchase date is more than 2 years ago. These headphones only last a few years.
These are great, if you can get a pair that doesn't have one issue or another. Headband broke on my original pair, the replacement they sent (that I paid out the nose for) had no sound out of either driver.
So , FOCAL and DROP did not test my pair at all. No sound of the left channel at all. And I still have to pay import tax.
P.S. RMA in progress , I hope second pair will be working one.
ShahoffHello @Shahoff This is Amy with Drop Community Support. We do appreciate you reaching out about this issue with your Focal Elex Headphones. We're glad that we were able to help resolve this issue with a replacement for the faulty unit you received. We love to help and always appreciate the opportunity!
I've had two pairs of these and the right driver just magically stops working at some point during their lifespan. I didn't even move this pair from the desk where I use them. They sound great but I expect something this expensive to at least last the year.
K.maxI was on the fence about buying these headphones, as the price seemed a steal. Thanks for your honest reviews; I will probably look elsewhere. Can't risk 600 bucks on something that might not last.
All the 5-star reviews you read are true. When Focal Elex works as intended, it is truly amazing. Its comfort is identical to the Focal Clear. And its sound is very similar, although a bit less neutral.
So why do I give Focal Elex just 1 star? If it wasn't obvious by now, the Elex is plagued with QUALITY ISSUES! The 1st unit I got had a noticeable channel imbalance. The 2nd unit was great for a while*, until the voice coil in the left driver decided to die without a reason.
* A while - period of time, determined by forces unknown. The voice coil could be DOE, die after a day, a month, a year... you get my point.
I was naïve to think that my 2nd Focal Elex will not suffer the fate of so many others. You may have a perfectly good working headphone, and if so - please go ahead and enjoy it! I certainly did. Just don't get upset when it suddenly stops working, because chances are - it will, eventually.
To end this review on a positive note, I will say that Drop customer service is amazing! I had a pleasure exchanging quick emails with a Drop representative, who offered to accept a return for a full refund.
