Aloe Blacc - Ticking Bomb was a song referenced in a Head-Fi post that was brought up by a Google search. The bass line in this song is a really nice headphone test.
Listening to that song on Spotify at my preferred normal volume I did NOT hear any clipping/crackling. The DB Meter app measured 60-65 DB. Listening to that song at a painful (for me) volume level, I did NOT hear any clipping/crackling. This would be about 70-73 DB on the DB Meter app.
Raising the volume higher, I did hear the clipping/crackling on the Focal Elex at over 75 DB on the DB Meter app. Considering that volume level is very uncortable/painful for me, I guess I'm not surprised that I haven't run into the clipping/crackling noise earlier.
My Senn HD6XX are hanging on a hook right in front of me, so I tried them. On the Senn HD6XX I also heard clipping/cracking. The DB Meter was displaying 81-84 DB at that time. It also happened at the same places in the song.
FWIW, the Senn HD6XX needed a higher volume level than the Focal Elex to exhibit clipping. On both headphones, I personally would not normally be listening at these high volume levels, it's just too painful for MY ears.
I downloaded a CD rip of the track, just in case the Spotify copy was the problem. Same experience on the CD rip as with Spotiify track.
Caveat: I did not do any calibration of the DB Meter app, so the numers are NOT absolutely accurate. It's just a way to baseline the volume levels in a personal listening session.
I still like both headphones, for me the clipping occurs at painfully high volume levels, which are well outside my use cases.
I imagine that all headphones will clip if the volume is raised high enough. I might run the rest of my headphone collectioppn, or I might not. If I do, I'll update this post.
in subjective terms, 30Hz is roughly the cutoff point for loud bass you can feel on these. at 30Hz you can turn it up loud enough that it feels a little uncomfortable and it still sounds pretty clean. below that, it loses the fundamental and just sounds like empty whooshing from mid to high volumes.
EDIT: looking at the drivers with a flashlight while playing tones just below clicking level, they're moving a LOT. pretty sure my numbers represent the drivers hitting physical excursion limits.
Luckily, I'm glad I read I wasn't the only one with this issue else I may not have sent them in for replacement as I figured I was just pushing them too hard. Hopefully, others get their issues resolved as well since this is becoming pretty well documented at this point.
