Looking at getting these for music and competitive fps gaming. How are they for competitive fps gaming (siege, csgo, etc.) and how are they for pinpointing footsteps?

ClassifieduserIn general, for competitive FPS games, you want a great soundstage, imaging/detail and a neutral sound so things like nades don't overwhelm footsteps. The Elex isn't your best option here, especially given the high cost. It has minimal soundstage and isn't as neutral as other options. Plus, at the price point, there's tons of other options. I recommend the K7XX or AD700X for gaming...but not so much for music.

ClassifieduserAudio-Technica A900 is the best I've used. Other than HD800

paulplanedinWould you recommend the hd700s as a middle ground between those two options?

ClassifieduserI've never heard it. The AKG K500/501 I had wasn't terrible. Probably the Beyer DT880 is a better middle ground

ClassifieduserI own both the hd 700 and elex, I prefer the elex over the hd 700's, but when it comes to gaming, the 700's edge out the elex a little. The 700's are wide, have great imaging, and crystalline highs, which is perfect for competitive gaming.

ezpzlmnsqzFor casual gaming HD 700 is my number one pick. For actual competitive gaming (like in competitions where over ear headphones are allowed) HD 800 S is the best. Most real competitions require in-ear headphones.

HaVoCTzuya, the 800 S would be the best, however, they're considerably more expensive. Also, there's no requirement for IEMs for competitions besides LAN events.

ezpzlmnsqzFor 1v1 type of FPS competitions it’s worth splurging on the 800S. For TDM competitions, HD700 is good. The HD700 is a little bit more laid back which allows your brain to not think so critically of the sound...Which lets you process other information, such as voice comms, but it still is pretty damn accurate soundstage and imaging wise, just not pinpoint accurate like the 800S.

HaVoCTzuIt’s a little bit hard to explain. But HD700 is easy to recommend when there are a lot of sounds happening... voice comms and 2 battles in different directions. HD800S makes your brain think because they are so good. Which is not always good for gaming when there is a ton of shit happening. but if you are only concerned with where one other guy is on the map, you can easily know with precision where he is with 800S.

HaVoCTzuUpdate. I have the HD 800 now also, I prefer the HD 800 over the HD 800S for gaming. They are a little bit more fatiguing but they are more spatially accurate. They are fine at low volumes.
