hoppy303I have both. Somehow, I think 650 is better in term of detail, wide range, and clear.

hoppy303I'm not too educated on the specifics of things yet, but I have both pairs. Just got the Ebony TH-X00s 2 days ago and they have a very unique sound from the HD 650s. While the 650s are great in clarity and just sound really bright and clear, the X00s are much warmer and I prefer them when listening to music with more low end. Sorry that this may not seem too useful, but it's what I believe from my experience.

iA1ecThe HD650s are bright? What in the world are you pairing them with? They are anything BUT bright, is your unit defective? They have a tiny bit of sparkle up top which is not even a negative, my hearing is super sensitive and that is one of the reasons I do own and use 650s, they get more head time than headphones that cost like 4 times as much.
I'm all for opinions and helping people out but what you just said almost objectively misinformation, I'm not categorically denying that may be what you're _perceiving_ them to sound like but if you're going against the very fundamentals of a pair of headphones and give a very unpopular opinion then please do add a disclaimer to your post saying "YMMV" or something along those lines.
Also FWIW the TH-X00 on the other hand are known to be quite harsh up to, they are (semi) closed Fostex headphones after all, though the Ebony are slightly less abrasive than the mahogany according to reliable sources. They do have more powerful low end however, that's undeniable but it is also a given considering they're closed backs.

VigrithWell I apologize for my ignorance in this category, but I gave my opinion. If you ask me I'd much rather have someone speak their own mind then ramble off some incomprehensive jargon. I said that I was uneducated on the matter and that it was what I believed from my experience, so I think that fits the bill for a proper warning.

VigrithNo need to be dissing anybodies opinion. I have the Purpleheart and the hd-650, The HD-650 are Brighter, both are good. You have to realize that he is the one that have both, not you.

Pierre111Firstly I wasn't dissing anybody's opinion, I made it abundantly clear that I respect @iA1ec 's opinion and that I think it to be perfectly possible that he may be perceiving sound as he is describing it. There's nothing he should be apologizing for here and opinions are just that, plus the more the merrier, this hobby is extremely subjective and it depends not only on one's chain of devices but also on their hearing and personal tastes. I was explaining and advocating that very principle in order to not have others be misinformed.
Not sure that attempt at "schooling" was warranted however as you have no idea what I have or don't have but unfortunately your assumption is incorrect - I owned the original TH-X00 mahogany from the first batch (sold them to pre-order the also semi-closed ZMF Atticus about a month ago) and I've had HD650s for coming up on 11 years now. The Ebony are meant to sound ever so slightly different and more balanced than the mahogany, eg. some of the brightness should be smoothed out but they're still Fostex headphones. Have you heard the TH900? TH600? T50s? 20s? I have owned most of them and heard the ones I didn't buy, they're all pretty harsh in the upper registries, at least out of dead neutral solid state amplification.
Maybe due to the overpowering bass on the Purplehearts you cannot really tell that the upper registries are finnicky, could be for a number of reasons. I'm not dismissing your opinion but Google HD650 review, click any or all of them, if you find a single one that describes them as bright or "brighter than x" please do link them here, I'd love to know (not being sarcastic). I'm not saying veteran reviewers (such as Tyll from Innerfidelity for example, who by the way also provides measurements and graphics that objectively explain the HD650s tuning IS warmer tilted) should make your or anybody else's opinion redundant but I'm sure you understand what I mean.

VigrithTo be honest though. You write some pretty long comments. haha
I guess it's still my bad that I'm not very knowledgeable on things yet. I appreciate the correction, but it seemed to come off a little harshly in the first comment. I respect that you don't want people misinformed.
