These sound better than I expected for the price. In fact, I think they sound pretty good. Sure, the bass and treble are emphasized. But they are way better than the usual ear-bud (the kind that just sit loosely in your ear) that comes with the average smart-phone. I compared them to my headphones, the Oppo PM-3, which are supposed to be about as close to the Harmon curve as anything out there, and I found with the Bolts that, for example, cymbals were too loud, but not annoyingly so. Keep in mind, I'm 56, and my ears are about 10 dB lower in the 4k-8k range (harmonics, cymbals, and sibilance) relative to frequencies lower than that. The bolts were also a little louder in the bass than the PM-3's, but some people will like this. The mid-range (voice, for example) seemed OK. Overall, nothing special, but for casual listening on the go with my phone, they're fine. Good for making phone calls too.
I did find it's easy to make them sound bad with poor fit. I tried different sizes of the ear tips. When I went too small for my ears, and they weren't tight against the skin, then they got real tinny sounding. Even with the right size tips, if they aren't pushed in to get a tight fit, they get tinny. And if they just sit loosely in your year, wow--really bad sounding.
So, for those of you who have found them too tinny (they will be somewhat tinny), try a larger size tip, and push them in tight.
