Really good, but not perfect. Doesn't have the "Wow!" effect of my HE-500, especially on female vocals, probably because of the roll-off of high frequencies. The imaging also seems to be down a notch, though that might just be because of what I'm used to hearing. On the plus side, detail is amazing, and the low end is great -- not emphasized at all, but it's just there, pretty much as low as you want to go. Non-fatiguing to listen to unlike the HE-500, could listen to it for hours, but with flatter response and more detail than an HD-600. Definitely feel like I got my money's worth.

SocrateaseSo I wanted to get to the bottom of it. How does this XX actually compare to the HiFiMan products. Hers is the response from HiFiMan for those who are interested: Q. Are the Massdrop Edition XX the same or similar in driver and tuning as the HiFiMan Edition X V2 or the Ananda? Which one is superior for audiophiles and WHY? 1. nope, magnets are not the same and thus the tuning on the XX is somewhat softer and warmer than the X and the Ananda. The Ananda is the most superior of the 3 in its technical abilities but you may prefer the sound of XX if you like a smoother and warmer sound. Q. I know that the Massdrop Edition XX has 'Symmetrical' magnet array whereas all new HiFiMan Models have 'Asymmetrical' magnet arrays. Which one is better and WHY? 2. Well asymmetrical means that more of the audio power is directed in on direction, ie to your ears so the initial wave can have greater energy given the same power input so the bass in particular has more of a slam to it. Symmetrical set up can deliver the same but would require more power as its evenly split to give the same power in that direction. Q. Finally, which one has better sound quality: The Massdrop Edition XX or the HiFiMan Edition X V2 or Ananda?  3. Ananda. However, as i say if you like a warmer smoother sound then the XX you may like better. I'm actually using one jut now and i find its easy listening very comfortable for use while working where I find the Ananda to be more engaging and thus attention seeking. Great to listen to but distracting if trying to work. The Ananda is the more capable headphone for sure but with their tuning differences one may appeal more than the other to you. More from HiFiMan: Ahh, so tuning aside, the Ananda is better than the XX. Its got better drivers / magnets and it can outperfom the XX in everyway if your happy to eq the sound signature. Its faster, more resolving, more detailed, more extended. Certainly its sound stage is much more airy too. The Arya, well its on a different level. Its much harder to drive than the Ananda but when you power it well it does everything better. Sound wise its closer to the HE1000v1 than it is to the Ananda but you need a decent amp to get the best out of it. You cant really use it portably where you can the Ananda. The Sundara compared with the big drivers lack depth and are a bit V shaped, they can match the XX and maybe beat them for speed but they really differ in the lows, the XX bigger driver can hit lows the Sundara can only punch. the other real noticeable changes are resolution, the Ananda is much more detailed and the Arya even more so. My comments now: Hope it help close the case. For me I feel bad about having bought the XX and further bad as Massdrop refused to cancel my order just a few minutes past the 2 hour order cancelation deadline. So, that's that!
