bjw*impossible
I'd love to, but nobody can produce planar drivers cheaply enough to hit a $99 price point while sounding respectable. Fostex is the closest, but that's the discontinued T50rp mark II which required considerable mods to make compelling.
FuckitConsidering the he-300 wasn't and that these are only $99, I seriously doubt they will be remotely comparable to the hd650. The hd6x0 line can be a TOTL system with the right setup.
These would probably compare nicely to the hd5x8 line, but nobody knows for sure until these start getting in people's hands.
FrogmeatObviously HifiMan beats them all, I did hear about the HE-400 but never had a chance to listen to them. HE-560 is obviously more expensive and I just love the sound signature, to me they are amazing.
JediYeah, I love my LCD-2F's. $99 planar magnetics might be unrealistic, but I feel this entry-level set of cans might be a great starter kit for those that are curious but have yet to cross over to HiFi headphones. I mean, with so many willing to invest $200+ on Beats headphones, which are very lacking in sound quality, I imagine a great sounding $99 set could be the tipping point, which then leads to upgrade purchases further down the line.
MusicIsGreatFostex T50rp mk3 is $159 @ guitar center, before a $50 mail in rebate thru august, and you can drop it further if you search around for a promo code. (Still gonna get these though... :> )
FuckitI think you guys miss-understood me. re-read what I said. I was commenting on what Frogmeat said. There is no way to make a headphone with Planers at this price.
gonusoMaybe I should have added the word not cheap lol, amazing about Fostex planars, they certainly made it available to the affordable crowd but like Will said you do have to get it through major transformations to make them sing. I don't blame you if you go for this pair, price is just ridiculously low. :-)
MusicIsGreatNot with the new MK3s, no modification is needed. At stock, it sounds just as good as the Mad Dogs, after rebate it will cost me $90 for a set of planars. It uses the same driver as MK2, but out the box Fostex already modded it.
FrogmeatThe HE-400i's have gone for 299$ on a couple of occasions, on Black Friday, and was it around Christmas as well. Waiting for such a sale to pop up again would be the best bang for the buck imo, on all of HFM products.
drwlfI got my pair of HE-400i for $233 earlier this year. I actually brought 2 more at the same price for my friends. It was a great deals. Does Hifiman offer deal like these every year?
gonusoWell dang, now I want these instead of the HiFiMan.... And I'd been wanting some HFM. Which should I buy? $142 on amazon with $50 rebate. What kind of promo code should I be searching for?
ZeroAirI got mine at guitar center bc the rebate is supposedly only for authorized dealers and even though one seller on amazon says they are, i couldn't verify it at the fostexusa site....i just searched for guitar center promo codes on google and came across one for 8% off any purchase over $50.
Why not both ? @ ~$200 total, it's a pretty decent deal. :>
gonusostill with tax from guitar center brings them to basically the same price as b&h within 2$ is amazon directly not authorized? they had them for 140 just a little while ago, actually i was in the middle of checking out and they jacked the price to 154. thats the one reason i hate amazon. prices change all the time. then i refreshed the page and it said 149$ and 5 min later it was at 154.95 again...
gonusodid you ever find out if the audiodeluxe was authorized? they claim they are and are back to 145 now. wonder how i can find out for sure. on fostex web site you have to look up by zip code but i dont know where they are
