Are these planar headphones?
Dynamic drivers; I knew $99.99 was too good to be true.
Nope, they are dynamic, and I bet HiFiman is sourcing them from some other company that makes dynamic drivers. Everyone in here is going ga-ga for lo-fi dynamic headphones, literally because a company that makes high-end planars put their name on it.
There's a lot more to cans than the drivers in them and HiFiMAN has a good handle on that. So much so that their PM cans are among the most respected in the industry at their respective price points. A "lo-fi dynamic" transducer in a crappy housing won't produce the bode plot given with the description so I think for the price point these are a safe bet and if they sound as good as they measure (especially after a scientific application of 2-ply) $99.99US is a steal.
I haven't heard these obviously, but based on my experience w/both dynamic drivers in general and HiFiman in particular, this is an absolute GOOD DEAL! Planars have certain advantages, true, but they also make up a relatively small percentage of the market for headphones and are priced much higher than most dynamics. Probably why you and I don't own one yet. Dynamics won't go away anytime soon but a deal this good won't be around forever!
planars are also much, much heavier. Though these are super heavy dynamics at 343 grams, holy cow!
