How reliable is this. I have heard of problems with people putting money into kickstarter. Does this work the same way?
I wouldn't worry about it. Hifiman and Massdrop are not a new companies looking for funding, they will make the headphones and massdrop will get it to you. This is more of a partnership between the two companies to bring you a really good headphone at great value.
This is no way like Kickstarter. Kickstarter is complete garbage and I'm done with that mess. I have a campaign on there going 3 years from the estimated date it was supposed to be completed and wont get fulfilled or refunded. The people in my campaign are actually trying to sue the creator for being shady. He went on vacation to Africa and started other projects...
Anyways, Massdrop you pledge. Some drops have pledge quotas, where a certain amount has to be bought for the drop to be successful. Other drops have price points, so many bought, reduce the price to a certain price point, and so forth. It's an easy to follow bar on the details page under the item picture. Lastly, some drops have a fixed price. (HE350) When the drop is successful, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't get your product, unless it's stolen at your door when UPS delivers it.
There are a few things you have to be careful about. Mainly the amount of days for pledges to end, amount, and ship date. As of now, the HE350 ends in 13 days. So all orders will be charged after the 13th day ends or whatever. There's a timer on the right side under the price. For this drop, there's an allocation of 5,000 units. Depending on Massdrop, that could be the cutoff, or they can secure more. Another thing you have to look for is the estimated arrival date. This is bolded on the bottom of the description page. The HE350s have an estimated ship date in August. Usually this is pretty accurate, but things happen and it can be advanced or delayed.
So either way, with Massdrop's record, this will be successful and go through without failure. Goodluck and enjoy these cans if you do get in.
Forgive me if it doesn't make sense or there are tons of grammatical errors, I'm tired.
You pay the money. They get shipped to you at the ship day listed. No reliability issues like kickstarter, you aren't investing, you are buying.
Kickstarter is more like throwing your money into a gambling pit. You either get something in return or lose everything.
While Massdrop is like your local shopping mall putting up sales everyday.
