If your ears are more than 2" top-to-bottom, the pads on these headphones will rest on the outside of your ears. So for 99.99% of us, these are technically on-ear headphones. Many have address this issue by exchanging the pads. Though, doing so will change the sound of the headphones.

These HiFiMan phones are the same diameter cup as all the older ones with exact pad replacements as my 560 and 500 and unless you have ears bigger than 2.75" or they are on stalks ,these like all other phones, are over ear phones.
