Product Description
Many headphone companies have tried their hand at planar magnetic drivers, but none have done it quite like HIFIMAN. The result of founder Dr. Fang’s PhD research at Columbia University, its driver technology has landed the company in TIME, Forbes, and CNET’s “The Audiophiliac,” and won it the CES Editors’ Choice Award Read More

Mine arrived today.. with a damaged cord. Yippie. Has anyone upgraded the cord yet? I've having a hard time finding a nice cable with the dual 3.5mm connectors. Would like something a little longer too.

This is what I got - but this has the 2.5mm balanced on the input side and dual 3.5mm. It's longer, but it's not very flexible and honestly it's unwieldiness bothers me every single time I use it. However there aren't many choices for 2.5 inputs unless you pay more. For regular 3.5 inputs there are more choices on Amazon but I have no personal experience. Good luck. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WMPNFS8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

What is the best choice for replacement pads for these? I got mine a year or so ago and the glue on the edges of the pads has given way. The leather and foam is still good but the leather is pulling back and exposing the foam. Any recommendations on repair and replacement are greatly appreciated!

Ah you just missed the drop. The Dekoni Premium Earpads, elite hybrid. Unless you don’t want to bring up the sub bass.

Forgive me if this has been addressed. Are these balanced? I.e., can I purchase an aftermarket (for e.g. Hart headphone cable) for a balanced connection? Thanks.

Yes it a 3.5mm cable to each ear cup so any after market balanced cable that has dual 3.5mm connectors will work.

I revisited this headphone, along with my HE400i and HE400s. I now prefer the HE400i overall, only because the headband comfort factor. With proper amplification, both the HE400i and HE4XX sound better to me than the HE400s (source is the Oppo UDP-205 and amplifier is THX-AAA-789).

Interesting, Did you know there is a HE-400i 2020 Revision. I assume yours is pre 2020?

I haven't tried the new one - at $169 it's a steal, as I think the HE400i can compete with the HD6XX and ESP/95X in the right system.

Based on how mixed recent reviews have been everyone should just get Sundara's and from my personal experience $100 earbuds are better than these headphones very sad

So, I'm looking into getting my first planar magnetic headphones. Right now, I'm debating between the 4xx and the new 400i 2020 ver. But I'm confused on if these two share the same exact driver, or if they're tuned differently in any way. From what I've looked up, there are mixed results; some people say that these two headphones have the same drivers, while others say they can hear a difference in the sound. Can someone clarify this please?

QC on the 4XX seem to be a mix as well. Some people say that it's comfortable and durable for long term use, while others say that theirs broke within a year. Though the 2020 he400i hasn't been around that long for me to see official reviews on it yet, so I don't know what to think.

I can recommend the 4XX based on my experience. I've had mine for about a year with no issues and they are my favorite headphone at this price range. I would recommend getting a nicer aftermarket cable though because the one it comes with is kinda janky.

So I’ve had my eye on these for a while. I currently have a set of HD58x’s and I really like them overall. I hate the clamp force and the stock pads but some Dekonis took care of that. Would these be a better choice? I’m currently running a Schiit Magni Heresy and listen to pretty much everything but country music. I will also be using them for gaming. Should I get these or stick with the Jubilees?

I think the 58x is the safe option for people but the 4XX imo blows it out of the water in presentation and speed. Its a much more spacious sound that feels tighter overall. I personally don't find them bright at all especially compared to 990s for example.

Thanks. I’ve been looking at the 990s as well for long listening/gaming sessions since they’re so comfortable. I really want the Hifimans but that build quality...the little circles are very prone to breaking. I really think that mounting system is a design flaw and I don’t know if I trust it.

I ordered both these and the 2020 400i from amazon to compare. I noticed immediately that the 400i were lighter so without testing the 4xx sound, I used those for a couple days. I realized after using them for at least 14 hours with leaving them playing music in between of uses to “burn in”, I wasn’t satisfied with the sound. The sound felt hollow and lifeless. Also, the headband left the top of my head sore also due to little padding and the fact that these have little clamp force, even with my oversized head. I then tested the 4xx. Even though they’re heavier, the headband and clamp force does a good job of letting you forget about having them on. Sound wise, better than the 400i. I was left wanting more life, impact, and sparkle (but not too much since my ears ring and strain with certain headphones like the Sennheiser HD58x) and the 4xx delivered. I’m keeping the 4xx and returning the 400i.

Left jack was very loose and eventually fell into the earcup. Had for about 6 months and just randomly happened. Pretty poor QC
