Overview Excellent value for a sub $200 planar magnetic headphones and is able to achieve crazy good sound quality with some EQ tweaking (e.g oratory1990's EQ settings), an amp is definitely required to achieve the sound quality much raved about. On an Atom, the high-gain setting is recommended as it does make a significant improvement in sound quality by bringing the mids in-line with the rest of the frequency spectrum as compared to when I was using it on low-gain setting where I hated the recessed mids which made listening to it rather unbearable. Once I switched it to high-gain, the issue went away and it became a really fun set of cans to listen to. DAC: JDS Labs Atom DAC AMP: JDS Labs Atom Amp Gain: High EQ: APO Equalizer with oratory1990's EQ settings (https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list_of_presets)
Music genre I listen to: Lo-fi, Chill-hop, Metal, Rock, EDM, Electronic, Progressive House & Progressive Trance. Pros
  • Great unbeatable value
  • Amazing sound quality that can be easily tweaked with EQ to fit your preference without distortion
  • Excellent entry to planar magnetic headphones
  • Wide and spacious sound-stage
  • Accurate and neutral sound signature
  • Deep slamming bass (with oratory1990's EQ)
  • Fast decay and tight bass (amazing for metal music)
  • Great instrument separation

Cons
  • Disappointing build-quality that likely will not stand the test of time
  • Uncomfortable headbands (places alot of pressure on the top of the head)
  • Earpads are good but certainly not great
  • Despite being marketed at 35ohms, it certainly does need an amp to achieve good sound
  • Needs EQ-ing to achieve its much vaunted sound quality
  • Extremely open and guaranteed noise leakage (not recommended for noisy environments)
  • Long shipping time (mine took slightly more than a month to arrive)
p.s. I also bought a pair of HD-6XX but not because I think its better but solely as a spare set when I want something different and as backup for when the HE-4XX fails. If I were to pick, I'd take the HE-4XX over the HD-6XX for the genres I listen to as the HD-6XX can't come close to the bass extension of the HE-4XX
