I own both the HE400s and the HD6XX, and the HE400s has better sound stage. These HE4XX look interesting, and I'm in if they have a better bass extension. By the way, kudos to Massdrop for going with the blue color.
are you using them with the same amp?
I'm going to suggest that your amp is your limitation with the HD650s. At a certain point, the quality of the amp will not make a difference with the 400s, but the 650s will just get better and better.
I would agree with FlavorJack. I have the HD600's and HD650's and both headphones mostly sound like the sound is coming directly from where the driver is, it doesn't have the open feel some others do where it sounds like the sound is coming from further away. Im using a Schiit Jotenheim.
Seems like you're projecting... I'm not disagreeing with him. If cheap planars have anything going for them it's the soundstage. Wait till you put on some high-end planars... I'm simply suggesting that there is a lot more to get out of the 650's. The Jot is a fine amp, but the base level amp for the 650s, frankly. I get that you guys might feel the need to disagree, but, at a certain point, the soundstage you hear with the 400's is limited whereas 650's lend themselves to more accurate 'holographic' imaging with the proper source and amplification (and modification!)...that's not opinion.
"sound like the sound is coming directly from where the driver is, it doesn't have the open feel some others do where it sounds like the sound is coming from further away..." I used to think that with the 650's, but that was a long time and a lot of tubes ago.
That's interesting! Actually I'm looking into getting a Tube amp, haven't listened to one before. Any suggestions? I was thinking about getting the one Massdrop has out now, but was a little disappointed to not see a balanced in on the front. The La Figaro 339 Tube Headphone Amplifier. Also wanted to try a different DAC other than the one built into the Jot.
