This is just my opinion, and this is assuming that the HE400XX is a modified HE400i, and everything I have read online, believes that to be the case. If that IS the case, this could be one of the best deals in Audio, anywhere. Last year, I picked up a HIFIMAN HE400i for the special black Friday price of $299, down from $500. And now, a year later this is my go-to set. I am still delighted and amazed by the sound quality. I can't vouch for the HE400XX but if it has the same build quality as the HE400i, with the same sound quality, at $170, it could be the best deal in audio. By using some EQ with my 400i, it took a very very good sounding headphone to the next level. I see the HE400XX has some modifications from the original 400i that could be some improvements on the original. I do like the matt finish shown in these images. Last year, I felt fortunate to get the 400i for $299, and these are $170. With what I know now, if I did not have the 400i already, I would pull the trigger on these.
Then again, the 400i is 219 new or as low as 169 used from amazon warehouse right now. That being said I joined the drop, so here's hoping massdrop worked some magic.
Same. I've had the 400i on my Amazon wishlist for months, and was close to pulling the trigger when they hit $209 last week. Today, I saw the 4XX was being offered again, and the initial feedback from the first shipment had me clicking the Join button before my brain could realize how difficult it's going to be to break the news to my wife how much money I just spent on another pair of headphones. They can be a tax write off, right??
I have bought the HE350, K7XX, 553 Pro, M220, HD6XX, and now the HE4XX. I would have to agree the HE4XX are the one of the best deals in headphones if not the best. The build quality is from the HE400 which is a really sturdy headphone and better build quality than the HE400i/S if you ask me. The thing about the HE400 was it became painful after awhile the HE4XX isn't. I am going on 5+ hours wearing them with no pain.
After spending some time with the 4XX, I couldn't be happier! Build quality, delivery time, sound, and perhaps most of all price - has made a huge fanboy outta me. I honestly think I prefer these over the 400i (at least the super janky pair I got used from Amazon warehouse and returned immediately). THANK YOU MASSDROP!
What differences did you notice between the 400i and 4XX? In your opinion, they are NOT the 400i (soundwise)? I saw some other posts online where the reviewer mentioned that it was a slight different sound signature, for the good. I can't remember where I saw the post, it may have been in here. Are the earpads different from the 400i? Sorry for all the questions.... for the price, I may end up pulling the trigger next time. I do have the 400i and am quite happy with them.
So the pair of 400is I got from Amazon warehouse were pretty jacked up and also did not have the original pads on them anymore so I am probably not the most qualified to make comparisons. If i had to I would say these are a little warmer and perhaps with more roll-off in the very high end. Take that with a grain of salt though because the 400is were messed up and I did not spend enough time with them regardless. I can say that so far there has not been anything I felt like was a noticeable sacrifice in getting the 4XX except maybe the packaging and the included cable - both of which I couldn't care less about. Sorry not more help but good luck in your decision!
Thanks, zaphrodbox... appreciate the information..
I see the 4xx back on Massdrop. How do you like them now that you have had them for a couple months ?
Ok thanks, think I'm going to go for it, it's a good deal.
Yep. I think these are the best deal out there for a pair of sub 200 dollar headphones. I have no complaints, I did replace the stock cable because I often use them away from my desk, but that's it.
Yea man! The HE 4XX is pronominal, I'm saddened to say I've bought and sold the HE 4xx like twice now and I will likely wind up with it again.
For open back headphones around $150 these are pretty stellar. I've bought them second hand every time and they've always arrived in immaculate condition! Yea the stock cable is a little short and the box is a bit paltry but overall these are a steal! I typically keep them around for a good point of reference when I do reviews and every time I sell them I wind up buying them back! Hopefully I've have them back again here in a few months and hopefully new! Even at their new price I think they are well worth it, amazing cans!
Nice, I might have to steal that one...
