Does anyone own the he4xx and the he400i? If so is there a big difference between the two? Unfortunately the issues I have read about caused me to hesitate. I came on last night to finally order and the drop is over. I ended up ordering a pair of he400i's for $179 last night and I'm just hoping it isn't a step down from these. I did watch some youtube vids comparing the two but they seem to contradict their impressions of the he400i in the older videos.
I bought a pair of 400i's a day before I saw this drop. I think they sound very similar, except that the 400i's are brighter and I think the HE-4XX have a little bit more bass extension. The HE-4XX also need a little bit more power.
Thank you for your response. I actually ended up gettingy hands on the 4xx as well as a 2014 400i and noticdled the old 400i sounds much different than the new 400i I just got and the 4xx. I also found a bunch of paper glued to the back of the magnets on both the new 400i and these 4xx's. Seems hifiman doesn't give a f anymore. After removing the paper off the magnets the sound had a massive improvement. Apparently all the distortion I thought I was getting from those two was nothing more than the paper and wires hitting that membrane and vibrating. After fixing them the new 400i and the 4xx sounds nearly identical except in my case my 400i's seem to be slightly better in resolution and bass extension. Not counting the 4xx I have now heard 3 different 400i's and all sounded different. One had no bass which thankfully wasn't one of mine and the others had differences in the highs and soundstage. There seems to be huge inconsistencies with hifiman.
