These are a terrific bargain for the price. If you've never had any kind of audiophile level headphones, great buy.
I agree with what most people say, they are smooth, clear sounding, and have decent enough bass. However, I prefer my K7xx and don't expect that to change with burn-in (much as I'd imagine a planar would have burn-in?). The K7xx has better sub-bass to me and a wider soundstage (latter factor makes is better to me for gaming). The AKGs feel more of what I want in an open headphone; also more comfortable (mind you, both are far and away more comfortable than other alternatives). I have a Fostex THx00 that I keep for closed back listening.
If you just want to have one headphone, these would probably suit you well enough. For reference I also picked up the HD6xx, and found it's not for me either - very smooth, laid-back and easy to listen to but I think I'm a mass audience V-shaped maniac.
For me K7xx > HE4xx > HD6xx (I only compared these, as same price range/open-back)
Similar sound to the 400S, but volume not as high with smart phones, no comparison to higher quality Audeze though but the LCD 2 costs 8 times as much.
