When will the HE4XXs drop again? Should I wait for these or just buy some HE-400s? (not interested in HD-6XX).
Give it a couple of weeks. Last time it was about a month between drops.
The 4xx and the 400i are notably better sounding headphones than the 400s. I have all three. The 400s is slightly more efficient, and has a bit more midbass. But the S model is coarse sounding overall, has less top end sparkle, less low end extension, and notably less bass articulation than the i or the xx. Only reason IMO to get the S is for portable use given the extra efficiency. But, since you'll need a very powerful DAP or amp to get the most out of the S anyway, I'd still go for the i or xx. The 4xx sounds almost identical to the 400i.
Same advice I gave folks waiting an eternity for the damn 6XXs vs a pair of 650s from Amazon; if you can afford the difference between MD's price and the best online price you can find, GET OUT LINE! The only rational reason for waiting 3 or 4 months for MD to ship is because you have no other choice (ie: you don't have the dough to purchase them at retail). Nothing wrong with that of course, but if you have the extra cash, why torture yourself?!
Look at it this way: divide the dollar difference between the two prices by the number of days you're going to wait for the MD item. It may turn out you only save a buck and half for every day you wait. Would you pay ten bucks more to wait ten days less? Maybe...
I waited for both pair (a looooong time) and now I wonder why the hell I did? I'm reasonably sure I WON'T DO IT AGAIN--unless there's no other option.
So, I'm enjoying the hell out of both the 4XX and 6XXs now that I have them, but between the two, I missed about four months of very enjoyable listening time. Time isn't just money, it's also missed opportunity.
I wish I ordered these too, but it wasn't on my radar. How is the bass compared to the 6XX ?
Well, certainly depends on the source, but when I fire up my favorite Meghan Trainor FLAC remixes, I would give the 4XXs the bass nod--partially because of the planar methodology, but also because of the extra-deep ear pads they come with. The combination makes them a little more engrossing. That said, if 6XXs were the only headphones I owned, I'd be fine them for many years to come.
Kidding about the Meghan Trainor bit of course, but if you like certified organic base, I'd recommend auditioning any set of headphones with this tune:
Hmmm, so the Difference is marginal that it doesn’t really make a difference? 650 are my first open backs and im suprised how good the bass is when it’s there, but I guess it depends on the mix.
