They were waiting at the front door for me today when I got home from work. I wasn’t expecting them until tomorrow. I had some chores and Memorial Day weekend prep to take care of before I could try them out. I unboxed and plugged them into my X7S and let them play on an Amazon Music jazz station for a few hours while I took care of my housework. I don’t know if the burn in thing is real, but it can’t hurt.
I have finally gotten a chance to sit and listen for a couple of hours and I like what I hear. I have been primarily listening to my 6xx for the past couple of months so my initial impressions are in contrast to the those. I think I remember what the 400i sounded like from my brief ownership and as far as I can tell the 4xx has the characteristics I liked in the 400i. As stated previouly I’m listening via SE on Aune X7S amp. Power is not an issue.
My initial impressions are that the 4xx have a very wide sound stage and great imaging. Bass is defined and not boomy. The highs and mids are crisp but not sibilant. The headphone is more alive than the 6xx. I’ll attribute this to the more forward highs and mids. HiFiMan knows no veil. The headphones are very comfortable and appear to be well built. Much better than the 400i I had for 20 days before the yolk broke and precipitated my purchase of the 4xx and the long wait. The cable delivered with the headset is OK, but a little short with a rolled up memory. I may be hitting up Periapt Cables for an upgrade.
After a couple of hours of listening I feel like I can safely say the 4xx are a temendous bargain and worth the wait. Well done Massdrop and HiFiMan. Well done.
How do you like them compared to your HD6XX?
Don't make me choose. I didn't get a lot of time with the 4xx over the long weekend, but so far I am very pleased with them. At this point in time I'll give the soundstage and and high end advantage to the 4xx. The 6xx has a slight low end edge, but I haven't really A/B tested them yet. Comfort-wise it's a draw for me. I can wear either set for a long time with no issues. The star of the show maybe my X7S. Both 4xx and 6xx sound superb with it.
I think both are a keeper. The 6xx will probably end up spending the bulk of it's time in my living room with the DarkVoice 336SE and the 4xx at my desk with the X7S or maybe vice versa. IDK.
I ordered the 4xx and 6xx also. I have the X1s do you think it will have enough power I know it has less then the x7s but does it have a lot less?
The X1S is a great DAC and an average amp. I am really enjoying my X1S/X7S stack. I can't wait to get my balanced 6xx cables to see if that makes a difference. If you can get an X7S I highly recommend it.
That said, the X1S drives both the 6xx and 4xx very well unless you want your ears to bleed. They are also great with my SR80 and m100 which really don't need an Amp to sound good. The difference in sound between the X1S and X7S is in the low end and fullness of the sound. I don't know if it's the extra power or the way the amp is tuned but it sounds warm and rich and I like it.
Before I got the X7S I was going to sell the X1S and try another DAC/Amp like the JDS Labs Element. This was primarily because I got a DarkVoice 336SE tube amp and the 6xx sound so good with it that it felt wrong to plug them into the X1S. This is not a fair comparison, but I figured there had to be better solid state options for my desk.
Because the X1S is so good as a DAC with regards to SQ, input options and pairing with the DarkVoice and my desktop speakers I figured I’d try the X1S/X7S stack. I'm glad I did. All my headphones sound great with it.
I am glad I have the X1S. It's a solid performer and a huge improvement over my previous setup (Audioengine D1). It's also helped me understand the difference in sound between different gear and what I like and don’t like In terms of SQ.
I suppose I could save money in the long run buying higher end gear up front, but I'm really enjoying the journey as I slowly improve my gear. I'm content with my setups for now, but the WA7 and the HD 660s do look interesting.
Wow. What a long ramble. Too much wine 🍷.
Its ok I like hearing people's opinions on this stuff. Its half the fun! Thanks for the info. I was thinking about getting the x7s eventually so I can hear balanced but I want to use the x1s before I upgrade haha. I also want to get a tube amp at some point because I hear (no pun intended) that the 6xx loves some tubes.
I'm with you on taking a journey with the equipment another big part of the fun is experimentation. I got hifi IEMs first and they sound good but its not what I'm looking for. I have cheap akg cans and they are nice but also not what I want. The aune has made them both sound clearer and fuller but I want more. I'm enjoying my journey through this music gear so far and I can't wait to hear whats next, hopefully it will be the 6xx.
Update on the 4xx. About a month ago I picked up a balanced cable from Periapt Cables for the 4xx to use with my Aune X7S amp. It's a huge upgrade. The 4xx respond really well to the Balanced power output. Soundstage and imaging are improved, the low end has more punch. Everything I listen to with this setup sounds phenomenal. It's like I got a new set of headphones.
I now prefer the 4xx to the 6xx with the X7S Balanced. 6xx is still undisputed champ with my DarkVoice amp.
I should be getting the x7s any day now. I like the 4xx and 6xx. I agree with your descriptions of the 4xx and 6xx I feel the same way. I also have the dark voice amp. I am also getting the focal elex and I will probably get balanced cables for everything. I have also been thinking about geting the edition xx. I guess its kind of like upgrading from the 4xx and the 6xx because I like them both. I'm having a lot of fun expanding my collection. I also have the trx00 purple heart for some intense bass but the highs on them extend really far too. They are basically high quality v shaped cans.
It was cool hearing from you again. thanks for the update! Deeper down the rabbit hole of audio equipment I go haha.
I said Actuailly a million times but am too tired to change it sorry haha.
