For such a low price this headphone deserves 5 stars for sheer bargain prowess! So long as this is plugged into a decent amplifier the sound opens up and is terrific! By contrast, anyone expecting to plug this into their cell phone or laptop computer is missing the point, without decent amplification this headphone will not sound as great as it can(more likely dull, actually!). I am driving this through an IBasso Bushmaster D14, which in turn is amped via an RSA Mustang P51 on high gain. I find this combination with the HE4XX heavenly, also because the P51 almost completely eliminates the Sabre DAC's glare. So my recommendation is to buy the HE-4XX, but only if you drive this through a decent DAC/AMP combo!

emscheffelThe LG V20 and V30 do a fantastic job driving these to angelic highs. Just use a volume controller with them to trigger high impedance mode on the phone.

HIFI778Hi there,
My argument about using a good DAC/AMP with the HE-4XX is not just about general "loudness" levels, but more about broader scalability more generally. I am fairly confident that moving beyond mobile phones and laptops (no matter how good their sound hardware and implementation) the 4XX can really shine, as their sound receive a noticeable lift in sound clarity and width. I have tried them on my mobile as well as my Win10 laptop and honestly they sound quite dull.

Will888The old V10 yes not the new V20. I have it for 2 years and never experienced any issues. 2 of my dearest friends bought the same phone after a year I had it and also no problems. Now you can find the V20for 300usd and it is a steal imo.

RaajesIt depends what style of music you like. I do not use my HD6XX for music but only for movies as it has a strong bass and very neutral highs. For music I enjoy my AKG712 Pro because they reproduce violins and cellos lifelike. The reverberations of these instruments with an AKG is simply sublime. I am a listener mostly of classical and Jazz music but also some rock-ountry style like Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits and the like... As Dac/Amp I use beside my bed a Balanced Topping DX7s which I use mostly at night with my Sony MDR Z7 close back headphone. I love them but just a little shy on highs... I just purchased an ATH W5000 for my night classical listening and still waiting for them.. For my desk instead I am using a crative Titanium HD from my PC as DAC and an Audiotecnica AT-SA55G as a AMP that can output full 30+ watts at the headphone jack. I need to be careful though not to raise the volume too much f not my cans probably will blow...

RaajesI like my HD58X more then the HD6XX and off course my AKG712Pro with Pop music which I also listen sometime but these headphones need some juice to sound the best especially the AKG. If you have a powerful AMP the AKG pretty much shines above all the others in my opinion at par with the HD800S. I have listened to both with several expensive AMPs and the AKG 712 Pro is really at par with the top Sennheiser for a fraction of the price but you need a powerful AMP. I did not like much the other AKGs as they were pretty flat and lacking on bass compare the 712. How much do you want to spend on a AMP? The best back for bang is definitely the Topping DX7s in my opinion and the AMP is just enough for my 6XX which has 250ohms and more then enough for my HD58X. For a more budget dac/amp I really like the Topping D3. Little, Powerful and has many imputs/outputs. It can be a good start if tight budget and can run pretty decently the 6XX so the others will all be fine.

RaajesI personally agree with many others out there that the HE-4XX and the Chord Mojo make for a very nice match indeed (if pocket-sized DAC+AMP combos are your cup of tea, that is...). In my case - and in view of being subscribed to Tidal Hifi - I have also bought a cheap bluetooth receiver which supports the relatively new aptx-hd codec, which I have strapped on top of the mojo, sort of a poor man's alternative to buying the rather bulky and expensive Chord Poly. I am very satisfied with this solution!

RaajesDX7s cost 400usd in massdrop including shipping overseas. It is a full balanced dac/amp with 2 latest dac chips one every channel. Also have balanced headphone output and balanced xlr output for external amplified speakers. It is the full package and one of the best bang for buck around for a full balanced amp/dac. The topping D3 is an entry level and it is really good for an entry product. Powerful, good sounding, extremely cheap (100us or less) but not balanced and not the latest componentry. If you can spend nearly 400usd for the topping DX7s you will not regret it as it is a very fine piece of technology with amazing built and materials used. It is all in metal. Has switch for 110/220 Volts for the traveler and it sound balanced and extremely clean. Amazing bass response and good power. In the future you can always upgrade the Amp with a more powerful one if need to power less efficient headphones and use the DX7s as balanced DAC. If you want to buy just a balanced dac will cost much more then the DX7s. I love my topping DX7s especially via balanced output 4 pin xlr. I had a listen to many more expensive amp and dac and for the money and features the DX7s was on top of the pac.

RaajesTopping D3 may do for you then. I fund one second hand for just 50USD couple months ago but gave it to a friend when I bought the DX7s. My AKG712 Pro I paid it 150USD still second hand via ebay. If you just need a powerful amp without DAC that can drive also normal speakers then try to find an Audiotecnica AT-SA55G or AT-SA50 for probably 100USD second hand (was 599 new years ago) as they are monsters of power and clarity made in Japan, with 30+ WATTS to the headphone jack and 75W to the speakers. Hope it helps.

emscheffelIn agreement with you that this HP will really sing only with a good high output amp. It sounded good but not exceptional with my Music Fidelity dac/amp but really came alive with the Schiit Magni 3 switched to high output. If there is a quibble, it will be that the much vaunted Hifiman bass slam is not quite there. The bass foundation of large orchestral works ( tympani, bass drum and contra bass) is detailed but on the light side. Overall an excellent buy.

dnalekawyeah that is why I use the thinner side of the yoga block to hold my headphones so my pads are not squashed... For headphones that have padded headrests better not to use hanging stands as the headrest pads will be squashed. I have a mix of both to accommodate different types of headphones as I have quite a few now...

Will888I use my LG V20 for all my music listening outside of my house and I have to say the Sennheiser 58X gets powered very nicely by it. Good output volume that I hardly reach 70-80% of max phone volume and the music gets pretty loud. Details are there and very refined in my opinion. Love all the LG line phones. My only complaining is in the signal reception which is really bad overall but this is for an other site and an other review ;-)

emscheffelI second your HE4xx comments. I drive mine with a Cowon DAP, and when I take time to just listen I'm always surprised at how good HE4xx is for ~$170! Come on... Properly drive-matched, they absolutely rival much loftier hps. HE4xx offers more than a sip of what good planar hp designs can do. Potential buyers be forewarned: Buying these might hook you on wanting a truly high-end planar at some point down the audiophile trail!

And mine did break-in after 150-200 hours at which point its bass response - although not a "slammin'" planar version - I find improved in sub bass and mid-bass definition to fit right in balance with the rest of its spectrum reproduction. HE4xx is a very good planar hp when properly driven and excellent for Massdrop-HIFIMAN to do @$170, but it's not a $1-2k+ Audeze. It teases and hints at that level tho.

RaajesFor the AKG I was referring to the 712 PRO not the 7XX which come from the 702 65th Anniversary Edition just not made in Austria but China. They sound completely different from the 712 Pro. I heard the 701 and 702 in Japan and I did not like them at all comparing them with my 712. Just less detailed midrange and just shy on highs. The 712 sounded fantastic even compared to the Sennheiser HD800 and HD800s using the 2200USD Sony TA-ZH1ES headphone Amp. I spent few hours comparing many headphone also the Majestic hand crafted Fostex TH900 MK2 and the Beautifully and extremely comfortable Sony Z1R. One small complain I have to make with my AKG 712 Pro is that I had to open it couple of times and re-sold the wire of my left driver. The wire it is so thin that sometime de-sold itself but nothing that a soldering tool and 10 minutes cannot solve. Now has been going for months without the need of reopening it. If you want to buy a 712 I advice you to look for a second hand pair via ebay and similar places. New is quite expensive for some reason. I bought a pair for 150USD nearly new but on ebay brand new goes from 500USD to 700USD. For a present to someone it really depends on your budget but personally I would go hands down for the Sennheiser 58X. It is just so versatile and can be used with an AMP or without and it sounds unbelievably good with any Genre of music for only 150USD brand new. Cannot go wrong with that as it has also 150 ohms and could be used also nicely with a Tupe AMP.

A more apples-to-apples (vs. Audeze, et al) is HE-6se which resembles HE-4xx's diagram cups but that's about it. It's a premium HIFIMAN planar hp costing ~$1600 more than 4xx and it requires more in a premium amplifier as well.

HIFI778You don't know how much I agree with you. Some people say the older, Austrian k712s sound noticeably better than the ones made in Slovakia as well. Not sure if there's truth to it but I've seen Austrian pairs sell for more. I have one of those Austrian made k712s and it's just a headphone I could never get rid of from the rotation. Perfect all-rounder ever made, hands down 100 times over. Never too bassy, never too lean, never to warm, never to cold, never too bright, never too dull. It's such a stupid perfect headphone that works for any genre and doesn't get tiring ever. All that said my favorite headphone is the Amiron, but that's a different story and the reason I love the Amiron is for many of the same reasons listed above.

HIFI778Probably 200 range. I'm not sure if I will need a dac because I have done much research on DACs to know if I need one. It doesn't have to be battery powered, I want to use it on the computer desk. Listen to music from the computer and be able to plug in phone to use as a music source too. I'm not looking for something that's the size of a gaming system, but some of the ones I seen on reviews are decent in size. (789 thx, labs atom, and etc.)
