Very good pair.
Build quality: Better than average Hifiman build quality. Certainly acceptable.
Comfort: Bit heavy, bit tight clamp but you get used to it after a while. Initially pads smelled like new pair of shoes
Sound: Very open. Its so open that if you move your hand over them(without touching them) it will change the sound. Lows are detailed and fast. mids were good for male vocals and certain instruments and are brought forward in sound stage. Highs are moved bit farther in sound stage and are bit subdued but none the less detailed.
Power requirement: No too hard to drive. I was able to get the best performance out of them at 40% high gain on AudioGD R2R11 and 45% high gain on Topping A30. Much easier to run than T50 mkIII but slightly harder to run than my M1060s.
HE4xx vs Fostex T50rp mkIII(with Shure pads): I still prefer mkIII but there are certain tracks or when i want to listen music in a more laid back setting i like to use there. They are really open. you will hear eveything outside and they bleed lot of sound.
HE4xx vs Monoprice M1060(With Dekoni sheep leader lcd pads and back replaced with thinner foam): They are almost same when comes to width but M1060s have better sound stage. M1060 is a better headphone but thats not a surprise here. M1060s highs are more detailed and better presented(except from 5k ringing which i ended up fixing). The base on M1060s is more impacting. but these are half the price.
What i didn't like: cable, its too short and not very good quality. I ordered a replacement cable as soon as i knew i was keeping these
These are definitely worth the price.
EQ i am running GraphicEQ: 22.8 2; 33.1 2; 61.4 0; 101.2 0; 161 0; 247.6 0; 407.9 0; 672 0; 1069.5 0; 1628.4 2.7; 2431 2.7; 3502.2 2; 5418 1.4; 8532.4 1.7; 13924 2.4

I would say he4xx have a sparkle with better high detail and cleaner bass notes than m1060s. M1060s bass is deeper but sloppy and high arent detailed with muffled mids. M1060s are crap cant wait to get rid of mine but im keeping the he4xx. If you amp up the he4xx at the right level it beats the m1060 in sound and quality.

LOL, I have the HD598se and have had the HE4XX for over a week. Without any EQ on both... In my opinion they are both great and the main thing I like about the (comparing to HE4xx) 598se is the soundstage and smoothness 598se cons for me is the bass can sound bloated on louder volumes and if you crank it too high on a amp it distorts a lot for me. The HE4XX has better imaging though soundstage is not as awesome as the HD598se. HE4xx seems crisper/cleaner fresh sound all around and smooth bass all around. Not super deep or bloated. And handles all the bass frequency really well! Same with mids and highs. The HE4XX on can handle loud volumes with ease and can equalize pretty well.
Those are my general impressions, maybe I am not too articulate on them but maybe others can chime in as well. Or ask me any other questions too. BTW the other profile primus1138 is me too but that was when I forgot I had a profile here lol but was still default on my cellphone settings. lol In short from all the headphones I currently own THESE HE4XX are on my head the most since I got them. Fun and great sounding for everything at home, like music, gaming and movies.

Thanks for quick review! Well based on your comparison they do not seem that different. I personally atm don't have dedicated amp or dac, but i use the 598 on my monitor's amp which is huge improvement compared to PC onboard sound and yea 598 seem to distort alot on higher volumes and even on medium volumes they do not sound very clear especially on the low end, so hopefully the 4XX will be great improvement. Btw i think ur 4XX is still not burned in fully since it requires around 300h, but it can be even more, for example even 598 needs atleast 40hour burn in, but for me it took good 2-3 weeks till the low end started to sound like supposed and i was using them daily for like few hours minimum.

The planars are crystal clear and have a pretty wide sound stage. The bass is tight and accurate but not pumped up....enjoy

Yesterday i've received them, been testing them out, so far for majority of the music it sounds 1:1 to 598, even the sound signature is almost identical ( slightly more piercing/bright treble on 4XX's ). Bass is weaker on 4XX, but alot better quality.
Basically for music they both are equal ( mby the 4XX fixes the small 598's cons ). However, i've tested them in some games and there's where the 4XX shines, they beat the crap out of the 598 in every possible way but not that highly.. Basically the sound with 4XX ( e.g. in Hitman crowded area ) feels like ure there, superior separation and imaging, while on 598 it sounds like everything is mashed together and bit exaggerated in bass + narrower.
P.S. I do not have DAC or AMP ( using my monitor as AMP, atleast it has alot more power than PC ). But planning to get one in the future, i think it will open these cans a bit more and should reveal more traits.
