Ok everyone, I've been all over the interwebs trying to justify this purchase to myself. I'm in like Flint, yet I have questions. Ok, first off, I've not spent a lot of time customizing keyboards, as much as it seems to be something I would completely be into. I went with the Halo True to try something different, but here's where I'm running into information overload. Background, I've been a mechkey user for a lot of years, starting with a Ducky zero, adding another, and also have a Razer with greens. But I've never thought to customize either of them. I'm considering starting with one of the two Ducky's.
1. Is there a source for the other switches? I've found the pre-order for the Kailh speed keys, so I thought to get a set of golds, and maybe coppers. Anyone know where to get the other switches?
2. Is there a point? I've found a lot of places to buy new springs, so I guess one could theoretically have an extra set of switch housings and change springs out at leisure to test different things. Anyone else do that?
3. Since you can change the springs, apparently you can chance the stems, too, but I haven't been able to locate a source for different stems. Can you truly do that to any housing? Where do you source the stems?
4. Should I abandon this thread and post these up at input club and forfeit any hope of achieving anything noteworthy today?

BecauseRacecar1) Yep, there are lots of sources for switches. See here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/wiki/switch_suppliers#wiki_cherry_mx_switches . I buy a lot of mine on the mechmarket subreddit. There are also group buys for switches on mechmarket(fairly often), so if you want to get some switches for a bit cheaper. But beware, GBs can go wrong sometimes so if you do join one try to find someone reputable. 2) Yep. People switch out springs sometimes, it's another preference thing. I know there's a guy on Reddit who uses 180g springs, can't remember his user though. Again, it's what you prefer to type on. Ex: If you like browns but want them to be heavier (harder to actuate), you can put a higher g of spring inside. MX Browns have a bottom out force of 55g. If you want, say, 80g bottom out force on a brown, you can purchase 80g springs and put them into your browns. A good thing to do when opening a housing is to lube the stem, since you've already got it open and what not. 3) Also yep. IMO there is no reason to stem swap unless you are making a specific switch. Ex: I am making Gatistotles with Aristotle Switch Stems and Gateron Blue Housings. Why? Aristotle housings are very brittle and prone to breaking. However, the stem of the aristotle can be used in a gateron housing to get a double-click effect. 4) Up to you, my dude.
Hope this helps!!

PixelFruitloopsAs far as I know, Ducky keyboards do not come with plates that allow you to remove the switch top (at least the two I own don't). You won't be able to change the springs, stems, etc at all unless you de-solder the switches. Also, if your Ducky boards have LED lights you will have to de-solder those too in order to remove the switch.
It's certainly not impossible and people do it all the time, but for me, I've decided it's just not worth it. I'd rather just build a new custom board and mess around with that. Pretty much every custom board comes with a plate that allows you to remove the tops and I've been using sip sockets so I can remove the LEDs without having to de-solder them.

ChitownM2I was writing everything assuming that Racecar would be getting the K-Type. Almost all modern boards are plate mounted, I believe. Some cheaper ones aren't though. Personally, I have done some LED repair on my Shine 3 and it was ------- hard to say the least. I definitely don't recommend a switch swap on a plate mounted board unless you know the switch type you're putting on will be the one you're using for life.
