Product Description
In the 1950s, when rock ‘n’ roll was sweeping the nation but headphones were still largely reserved for communication purposes, Koss came along and changed everything by making the first stereo headphones designed specifically for personal music consumption. Since then, the company has continued to bring listeners closer to the music they love, and among their most popular releases was 1984’s Porta Pro Read More

Was on the fence about whether to pick up these Koss headphones. While passing time an antique store this weekend, I came across an interesting box...

It was like I had stumbled upon a Massdrop collaboration headset in the wild...I was powerless to resist. They're Koss SP/3X, circa 1960. Took them home, plugged them in, looked up the top songs from 1960, and played some that I had in my collection - Elvis, Marty Robbins, Roy Orbison, Everly Brothers and some others. They worked great and I was able to hear an authentic rendition of what it sounded like during the earliest years of this hobby. Pretty cool. They'll make a great decoration for the listening station I'm setting up in my home theater. Fully functional, nearly 60 year old Koss "Stereophones" discovered at random was obviously a sign to join yet another headphone drop for headphones I don't need :)

I'm in the midst of upgrading, picking up the individual pieces as I find good deals. The end game is a 7.2.2 Klipsch Reference Premiere setup (I'll be hooking up 5.1 of that soon), Denon receiver, and 65" LG OLED TV (already in place, best picture I have ever seen). I have a separate part of the room that has the perfect space for a recliner and a side table. I'll be re-purposing an older tablet with a Schiit Modi/Magni stack there as a headphone listening station.

I agree. Porta Pro X are my first pair of porta pros and they sound amazingly good for $35 no matter how they look or who uses them. Worth every penny!

>you would have to be ignorant if you don't realise that they are on here because the retro look is trendy for hipsters.
... just.. No, Absolutely not.. lol. This line from Koss is consistently recommended at this price point due to raw sound quality, check head-fi and similar forums, they're highly regarded for their sound quality, a few years back there was a running debate whether they sounded better than the triports @ 5x the price ; general consensus was that they did. Now, that's as much testament to the Triports being audible-crap (but super comfy!)as much as the quality of the Koss, but again, they're great bang-for-your-buck.

DT990s are my current pair and they're probably not on your "they look decent"-list either.
On a more serious note: Did it make you feel better to mock other peoples style? Do you not realize there's probably people out there that would mock your sense of style as well? Everyone is different, try to accept that next time you feel the need to mock a product that is very well-known, and has been for decades, just because you don't like it.

These look like they should come with a cassette player.
And I mean that as a compliment.

I have maybe 15, but I'm wiling to go through thrift stores, flea markets, etc. to find more if this is an actual product that could happen.
I mean, buying the old players is an option, but nowadays we can produce things with much higher quality.

The outward design of the Porta Pro hasn't changed since it went into production in the 80s. Plenty of these headphones lived and died plugged into cassette players.

Thanks for your kind words. Seeing the excitement on that kids face was worth more to me than the headphones. I can thank my folks for raising me right and showing me more generosity than I could ever repay.

TBH the frame/housing around the speakers looks kinda.... flimsy. But, for some damn reason... I want them? The specs look nice and I like that they fold up. They're pretty cheap too and if they actually sound good... well heck..
BTW - What is that screw thing that's on one side?

although I can't speak for every head type, I can assure you the discomfort feeling of it pressing against your ears will only ever occur when you've used it 3 hours straight. You either live a life without wearing any on-ears or you have no idea how lightweight this headphone is.

The compelling argument against paying up for real Porta Pros isn't the knock offs, IMO, which are often bad, but the cheaper and also legitimate Sporta Pro and KSC75 models.
I will say, though, if you got a good knock off, that's great. Chi-fi doesn't *have* to mean bad.

I was turned onto Koss via the KPH30i and they have become my go-to mobile headphones for radio and podcasts. I like the way Porta Pros sound for mobile listening, but I found that they caused discomfort on the ear after 20-30 min of wear. The stock pads for the KPH30i seem thicker than the Porta Pro (but I have not measured).
I ordered ear pad replacements for the Porta Pro from Yaxi Pads, for $12 with free shipping to the US from Japan. They are a worthwhile upgrade, IMO, they distribute the pressure and buffer the contact points between my ear and the speaker. I'm sure the additional padding affects the sound in some way, but listen-ability for me comes from being able to wear them comfortably first.
And yes, they also come in black!

Okay I put Yaxi Pads on them today, took quite a while to get here. Sound about the same and I'm too lazy to swap pads on them again and really listen it through, just not worth the time haha. But they do sound great and the comfort is ridiculously better, worth it alone. Not a terrible purchase for something I like to use on travel. Thanks
