Sadly I received a moldy pair of Meze 99 Noir. Fortunately after contacting Massdrop they quickly refunded my money and recommended that I dispose of the headphone. But the DIY tinkerer in me got the best of me. I completely broke down the headphones. In the process I think I discovered the chain of events that lead to the these headphones being covered in mold. The first thing, at some point during the shipping or storage process I think humidity was introduced and some moisture developed inside the package. Second, Meze used some cheap steel screws that just had a thin coat of black paint to protect them from corrosion. On my pair, most of those black screws were corroded and some developed some deep rust. I think that the bacteria from the corrosion easily then spread to the wood and helped cause the mold. So now in order to help restore these headphone to safe use here is what I am doing. After breaking everything down I deep cleaned the wooden cups with multiple disinfectants and left them soaking in vinegar for a few hours. Hopefully all that nuked any trace of mold from the wood. After that I decided to throw away the ear pad and headband just in case any mold or bacteria penetrated deep into the foam, where it is hard to clean. I ordered a new set of sheepskin Dekoni pads and I am going to use my leather working skills to make a new headband. Last I'm going to replace all the cheap factory screw with some nice stainless steel screws that wont corrode so easily. I bought a large verity pack of screws for eyeglass repair on Amazon and It should have all the screws I need. Once I get everything I need and I put back everything together I can post an update of the rebuild.

Old.Dirty.PuppyI wonder what thread pitch they're using and whether it's imperial or metric. I'll measure my own set, but it'll be good to have extra verification. Looking forward to the update.

abomablenomanI got this screw set on Amazon and it had the majority of the screw I need to replace all the cheap painted screws on the headphones. HOTMMGR Small Screws Assortment Kit 18 Kinds M1.2 / M1.4 / M2.0 Tiny Micro Screws Set for Glasses Watches (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GXDSM84/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_J6SVTSA95Q6J394N1VZP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 You pretty much just need 2X4mm and 2X6mm screws. I didn't replace any of the orignal stainless steel screws since all of those were good. Also I am pretty much done restoring the headphones. After all the cleaning and disinfecting I replaced all the problematic screws. I then decided to get rid of the scrawny wires linking the 3.5mm jacks to the drivers and replaced them with larger gauge copper wires. I threw away the original comfort strap and I made a new leather comfort strap. I also threw away the ear pads and ordered a new set of dekoni pads. Once the pads arrive the headphones will be done. I am currently testing them with a pair of oversized ZMF pads that I stole from my Atticus until I get the new pads.

Old.Dirty.PuppyThe cleaned up headphones look good, and the wire upgrade sounds like a great idea. They really do look like the weakest link in the set. Thanks for the info on the screws, time for me to go grab some replacements for myself as well.

Old.Dirty.Puppy@Old.Dirty.Puppy did wooden cups change their color after 2 hours in vinegar? Going to pick up mine tomorrow and expecting that most likely there will be mold :)

adoggI didn't notice any color change in the wood after the vinegar. The satin lacquer finish held up well.
