I received my Meze 99 Noir's last Friday 29th October (Australia), they presented with mild mould on the case (3 locations, very light), and a trace on the headphone frame. Upon plugging in the headphones I realised that one of the speakers does not output sound at all (I reversed the cable, and the issue stayed with the same speaker). I pulled them apart and found mould inside of the cup, and rusty screws https://imgur.com/a/dTpvJVJ This existed on both sides, visually to the same degree. (Even if your headphones look fine, I would suggest pulling them apart to check, it is fairly easy) I cleaned them with vinegar/water, and then with contact cleaner. Nearly a week later there is still no sound from that speaker. I am wondering if anyone has any idea why this would be? this is definitely not my field, and my guess was a short (due to the mould) Drop refunded my money when I responded to their initial email, but I deliberately purchased these headphones as a more ethical/environmentally friendly option, and would really like to get them working correctly, hopefully for a long time.

verbosity9There is probably some corrosion within your drivers, which might have ruined them. On my pair there were some signs of corrosion on the wires linking the 3.5mm mono jack to the driver itself. I replaced those wires. But if there is corrosion within the driver itself it might be easier to just buy a new set of drivers if you want to try to fix your headphones. I remember seeing Meze 99 classic driver on the same site I bought my Grado Hemp drivers from, for my Grado woodies project. I'll link them below if I can still find them. The drivers appear to be held in place within the plastic housing by just glue. you can probably just use a heat gun or a blow dryer to release them. just be careful not to melt or warp the plastic housing. Anyways if you like to do DIY stuff it could be a fun little project to restore your Meze, it was for me. Old.Dirty.Puppycheers for the reply :) I was hoping it was just the wires, although they look fine (the are mainly under a sheath though). I have ordered the drivers from the site that you linked, I was unaware that diy headphone sites even existed! I would appreciate it if you could give me the details of the wire? (gauge, or whatever), I have a soldering iron, or 2, but have not used them for a decade , or so. I assume the wire itself could have an effect on the balance (at least) of the headphones, if I am only replacing the one side? It is very fine wire, and we were in the midst of a 3 day blackout when I cleaned the headphones, so admittedly it was hard to see much detail, one of the wires appeared to be bare copper though.

verbosity9The stock wires are just bare copper, they are pretty cheap thin wires with a low strand count. Even though they worked just fine on my pair I decided to swap the wires anyways. I used 26 gauge OFC speaker wires. It didn't effect the sound in any way. Personally I just wouldn't use anything thicker than 24 gauge wire, otherwise you might have fitment issues if you do. Good luck with the repairs, hopefully swapping out the drivers from the housing doesn't give you too much trouble!

Old.Dirty.PuppyThank you for the help, and yes, hopefully the drivers are easy enough to remove. Worst case scenario I will buy original Meze 99's and the Noir's will be spare parts...

Old.Dirty.PuppyI replaced the driver and the wires and... it works! very happy, thank you for the tips! I used 26AWG jumper wires and lead free solder at 400°C https://imgur.com/a/dwZQIkb fix + old driver showing corrosion
