Coming from the standpoint of recording, I think I have an overly critical idea of what I consider a "monitor". To me that has always implied a relatively flat frequency response, broad frequency coverage (20Hz-20kHz), etc. Studios use monitor speakers to create as clean and flat a representation of the sound as possible. Sound engineers, mixers, boom ops, etc, will use monitor headphones for the same reason. A monitor shouldn't emphasize (or de-emphasize) any part of the frequency coverage or it's not doing its job as a monitor.
The NuForce EDCs make really nice earphones for listening to music, but I'd hesitate to call them "monitors". They tend to emphasize the low end, somewhat at the expense of some of the high end. Because of this I prefer them to the headphones I keep in my sound bag when I'm listening to music. But I'd be very leery of using these in the field while recording because they don't give an accurate representation of the sound. Pleasant, but not accurate.
Which just illustrates the point that before buying a piece of equipment, you need to be very clear about what you want it to do and how you intend to use it. I like these for music, so I keep them for that purpose (and I'm glad I got them for just that reason!) But I don't like them for monitoring while recording. They're just not flat enough for the purpose.
