Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?
Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

Here's how the reviewer describes his first sample:
"I have to admit that the review sample I got ended up being a disappointment due to the sound being overly bassy with no treble. Even with 1 week of driver blasting I thought the guys at Massdrop went over the edge. The sound was terrible. I told them if this is what they have planned for a big release then I questioned their direction. My concerns was quickly met by them overnighting a confirmed good sample. Long story short. The newer sample I got was in deed a different beast! "
Right there is where the reviewer should have said -- this is a red flag, dear consumer, proceed with caution.
What happened between the first sample and the second? No explanation. Would your purchase sound like the first or the second? Who knows?
The reviewer does tell us that, " Disclaimer: No Chinese food was wasted ..." He thinks he is a clever writer. Sadly, this kind of opinion writing does little to enlighten us.
These could be terrific-sounding earphones; we'll never know from this writeup.
In his profile, the writer describes his occupation as, I kid you not -- "Mess with people." Maybe he does that as well with his "reviews."
"The result is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience: spacious, detailed, musical, and coherent, with a bit of extra bass that doesn’t take away from the overall balance. "
So if they allow these "enthusiasts" to turn everything neutral despite the description reading "bassy" then I would return them.
It does surprise me that they wont ship till October. The sound is very worthy of purchasing. Even though I may come off as a goof ball I am very serious about my sound. I have done many reviews for NuForce and lead an active roll on headfi.org.
I can get into the sound a bit more later but you and others will have to trust that these guys know what they are doing with these IEMs.
I'm sure that the folks at NuForce know exactly what they are doing. But there are many flavors of IEMs aimed at many different markets and consumers.
Which is this? We don't know -- it's a mystery IEM.
If I were marketing earphones toward a market that is more price sensitive, I would send samples to enthusiasts who might gladly give a positive review in exchange for a freeby and a chance to get more readership for his or her review.
If I were marketing earphones toward an audiophile market, I might send samples to a more established reviewer who would compare them with others of similar price. The best reviewers would even measure them.
Again, no offense. But in the absence of facts or more informed opinion, we are pretty much left to judge these by how they are being marketed.
These are not an analytical sounding earphone meaning they are not ruler flat or claim to be. I suppose if that is the type of sound your looking for I would look elsewhere. I did take a jab at folks that like analytical earphones on my review as I describe an analytical sound as "Skinny sound."
I would say the sound profile is more consumer oriented than audiophile but show me an audiophile that listens to tracks out in street to pick off details. These are meant to take on the road to enjoy as you shop, hike, ride a bike, or in my case drive to work. Lol.
They have a good balance between highs mids and bass, with a bit of relaxed treble for a non fatiguing sound but the real calling card on these earphones is their ability to do sub bass with almost no drop off. So I would say if your music taste is eclectic as my own which is just abuot everything that is well recorded. I would say these are excellent for their intended purpose which is using them out and about.
If you are into high amounts of precision, detail and imaging. I would look elseware. Your not going to find this with a $60 IEM but if you want to get lost in your music out and about and actually enjoy your music. Ya I would grab a pair. It is a no brainer. For all the 100s of earphones I have owned and or reviewed I have only given a 5 star review to two IEMs. My Sony Z5 and the EDC.
-Quick comparisons. Shozy Zero vs the EDC. Similar sound profile actually but Zeros are about the mids with little treble sparkle or extension and a bit flabby sub bass. I only wish they sounded as engaging as the EDCs. EDCs not only do they have comparable mids but the highs have a bit more refinement and sub bass of the EDC has authority Shozy Zero can't begin to match. EDC is clear winner here for sonic ability and both cost about the same.
Audio Techinica IM03. The ATs are actually with upgraded cable also has a similar sound balancing/ profile to the EDCs. Sure the ATs are a superior earphone but out on the street it becomes more even playing field. Here is what I meant by " You will wonder why you spent so much on your earphones." My IM03 with upgraded cable cost me almost $400. It is a 3 BA earphone but has a similar sound balancing as the EDC. Much better sound separation, detail in every part of the spectrum minus the sub bass. So you get what you pay for here in the IM03 however when I am out and about. I actually preffer the EDCs simply because they do sub bass better than the IM03 and sound just as good. Am I gonna miss the hyper detail I can get from the IM03? Nope cus I am not really listening for it out and about.
JVC FX850. One of my all time favorite IEMs. If you are serious about your audio. I highly recommend a JVC woodie to add to your collection. Again here is a superior earphone in every regard over the EDC as they should be. However out in the street. They isolate poorly so I can throw all them great sonic abilities of the FX850 out the door cuz they leak in sound as they are semi open. They are superior in every way yet don't sound superior in the library cus I can hear the person next to me chatting away even with music playing. EDC isolate much better and has enough detail and ability to reproduce any track you own the way it is supposed to sound.
The EDC is beat by a lot of earphones I own truth be told but when you take them out that is when you will appreciate what they do. I have also own other micro dynamic iems that all have solid sonic capabilities including Sony HM1C, JVC FX51, JVCFXD70, FXD80, Zero Audio Tenors, AT CKN50 and CKN70..
Believe me micro driver tech is vastly under used and when Mike at Massdrop contacted me to do this review and I found out it was a micro driver I had a good idea how they will do for sonics. They did not disappoint.
The sound does have a slightly warmer tilt to the tonality over a neutral tone. The treble is actually done really well here and show plenty of shimmer and sparkle when called upon but is not going to pierce your ear with it. I feel mid range does an excellent job of portraying vocals and instruments in an accurate natural way vs being over hyped or too colored in any reagion. It does female vocals really well and does male vocals even better. The tuning is a safe one but then has this awesome sub bass with crazy texture that reaches deep. Excellent sound on the go.
Great sound for the value with perks like replaceable cables.
I have mentioned it before and I will say it again. Wait till you guys amp the EDC. It will surprise you. These scale to more power better than most. And this why I am actively looking for a good balanced cable for the EDC. I have a very good feeling these will sound even better in balanced mode.
Fuller bodied sound vs the CKN70. Warmer more natural tone vs the brighter somewhat metallic tone of the CKN70. No sibilance vs the CKN70 as well. Overall sound is thicker fuller a bit more roomier, the EDC actually has the better balance between the 2 earphones. CKN70 has a bit better width of sound but not the depth of the EDC. CKN70 does detail well, better than the EDCs but at the cost of that sharper treble and is easier to drive. I would say the CKN70 was very close to being an analytical type sound signature and the EDC is much more musical and more natural easier non fatiguing sounding earphone. The EDC actually has the more versatile sound signature vs the CKN70. If you like a more brighter sound signature you might not like the EDCs.
As good as the EDC is outdoors. They actually sound better indoors. Wait till you guys try them on an amp. I will leave that up to you guys to hear for yourselves. On an amp they don't sound anything like a $60 earphone. They don't sound like earphones. Lol. All in due time. ( Definitely try my tip mod on my review I posted on Headfi.org. ) They sound better to me in every way with a wide bored tip.
The EDCs has the type of sound that might not Wow you on first listen. It is when you listen to them. And get used to them is when they grow on you. Guys will appreciate how natural the sound is.
Give them a solid burn in and try them with your favorite tracks and on all your sources.
Just a guess or a prediction on my part but I think these will become a big hit.
