@CEE_TEE While cleaning my right IEM due to significantly reduced volume (either clogged, or jammed damper, it's better now) the filter popped out onto the table. Is there any way to get a replacement damper, or do you have any words of advice on reseating this filter (besides, you know, "gingerly")
TWD-IndustriesHey TWD-Industries,
Checked with NuForce and we can't tell exactly but that chunk you pulled out with the pin: does it have any mesh on it? The damper is actually a metal cylinder that has damping material inside of it and that does not have any metal around it. There is also mesh protecting the damper.
We are wondering if that entire bit is wax build-up that you have pulled out. There may be another chunk of wax build up in the other earpiece that you labeled "filter"?
Also: we recommend something like this instead of a pin to clean the wax out https://www.amazon.com/Westone-50123-Wax-Loop/dp/B00864TZHG
Is there anything else you can tell us about that bit on the end of that pin? Is there any mesh on it? Is it pure wax?
As for cleaning dampers, we don't have any information off-hand on how to do that. They are Knowles dampers so we may be able to find something more through search or Knowles.
Wondering/hoping that there is just another chunk of wax in the other earpiece you can pull out and that the dampers are still inside and intact (protected by mesh)...
CEE_TEEWell, we're now dealing with the past, but if the material was wax, it was remarkably mesh-like. It had the scratchy texture of metal mesh, and was unmarred by the thumbtack.
What I was trying to show in the side by side was that you could see straight through the barrel of the non-filtered IEM, as if the damper had been decoupled from the metal cylinder.
Thank you for posting the loupe, I will use it for future IEM cleaning.
TWD-IndustriesAh, so maybe that was pulled out from inside of the metal damper tube...we considered that possibility as well.
The dampers weren't meant for removal and cleaning, hopefully you can use the tool on a schedule so often to reduce build up. I'll have to try a super thin electrical set of tweezers and see if I can pull out a damper.
CEE_TEEHey-o. Just wanted to give a quick update: Massdrop kindly replaced the IEMs in July and I went ahead and ordered the wax cleaners that you recommended. Sadly, a scant four months later, I'm experience the same audio drop off in one ear that prompted me to reach for the pushpin in the first place. I'm flummoxed. The loupe isn't rectifying the problem. Is it possible the bluetooth cable I'm using (massdrop x mee audio) caused it, as it's a common factor between the two incidents?
I also ran hearing tests with my cans to make sure I wasn't just developing a very peculiar tinnitus.
EDIT: Oh, I see from @CEE_TEE 's profile that he is no longer Senior Product Manager... Thank you for your help, if you're still around. @Jyri , is this something you can assist with?
