I am thinking of picking these up and getting some custom shells made. I have never had a good experience with comfort and getting a seal with IEMs. Does anyone else have experience getting custom ear impressions done for universal IEMs?

I know for my Shure's they recommend Sensaphonics: https://www.sensaphonics.com/for-shure-earphones.
They do other custom molds so I'm sure if you contact them they'd probably have a solution for you.

Did the custom shells alter the sound profile of the IEMs at all?

Only for the better. Provides the best isolation compared to silicone/foam tips. Otherwise, it doesn't alter the sound whatsoever. Honestly, for $275 (including the cost to see an ear doctor for molds) it's reasonably priced. Also, depending on the model, they can be somewhat universal between different IEM's but the SE846 is different than it's siblings so you'd have to get different molds for it compared to the 215/535/etc. that are interchangeable.

FWIW, the nuforce edc has a literal perfect fit in my ears. It's as if they just slid into place by themselves as I was putting it on.
Really didn't expect a good fit as, with most in-ears, I have to fiddle around with them for a bit. And even then, I just waited for my ears to get used to then being in there instead if it being super comfortable like the EDC's.
