shotgunshaneDifferent tuning? Then it must be one hell of a tuning for them to be priced so far apart from one another. The HEM 6 are supposed to be retailing for some $300+++ and the EDC3s are going for just $100. If it's just the tuning that's different, I want a refund on my HEM 6.
sangviroIt’s like this with the Noble X too. It’s just a differently tuned dual driver from the Sage and Savant but the X is significantly cheaper because MD can order a super large quantity. The price of the EDC3 is a reflection of the MD buying power.
sangviroOf course not. HEM6 has way more expensive drivers, higher end braided cable, more sophisticated crossover design, different tuning and more accessories. Driver selection is the main difference though. The HEM6 drivers cost roughly 3 times more to procure. We could never sell HEM6 with $99. Our own manufacturing cost is higher than that. Does the HEM6 have better performance than EDC3? Yes. Is the performance 3x better? That is subjective - as always with high end audio.
However I have to say... To be able to manufacture and sell 3BA driver IEM at $99 is not easy. It took us more than 2 years to find a driver combination which is up to our (and Massdrop´s) standards in terms of reliability, production tolerance as well as sonic performance. With both EDC and EDC3 we promise L+R channel balance within +/-2dB. Not all sub $100 IEMs have similar tolerance control. We had to redesign EDC´s driver production method to be able to deliver this!
Also, we would not be able to sell EDC or EDC3 at $99 without Massdrop.
sangviroLol, I’m supposed to know the exact drivers and crossover parts? It’s still a triple driver with tight tolerances and I think it sounds better than the HEM6. Of course they have to cut some corners to save on the cost to produce. The biggest difference is still tuning more so than anything else. At the end of the day how it sounds is all that matters.
frivoflava29My thoughts exactly. @shotgunshane commented as if he knew exactly the reasons behind the price difference between the two IEMs. If he wasn't sure to begin with, he shouldn't have have just replied with a direct answer like "Different tuning.". Besides, I was asking @Jyri for answers, not you @shotgunshane.
