A "Massdrop Community Collaboration", "Massdrop Made" Jacket, which we wont actually make available to half the Massdrop Community!
Those of us in NZ can't buy the jacket, nor can anyone in Australia, or UK and the entire EU! So where the hell can you buy this unless you live in the States?
It's hard not to get cynical about Massdrop, supposedly a group buying community for the benefit of members all over the world, that apparently allows a manufacturer to tell it who it can and cant sell its own Massdrop exclusive jacket design to.

"Missing" in that they removed the pockets when making the Massdrop version- the original version has the pockets, and is explicitly a climber/mountaineering jacket, which is also obvious from the short length, and slim fit. It could of course be used for other things, but it's fundamentally a climbing jacket.
Damn, the more I look at the original, the more I want it.

Leonidas , please..... it is obvious that you are not either.... otherwise you will know .. the pockets are important and does not interfiere with the hip belt on any true mountain jacket ... please be careful on your comments :) .. no hard feelings please ..

Hello Everyone,
We are ecstatic to announce our first collaboration with Rab, probably best known for their high-end performance waterproof and down jackets. We've been working with them since the early days of our Ultralight Community here, with tremendous community response based on the high quality, excellent fit, top-end materials and focused design.
Rab came out with the Kinetic Plus last year, quickly winning numerous awards, accolades and top reviews. Check out the Editors' Choice Award for Backpacker Magazine: https://www.backpacker.com/gear/rab-kinetic-plus-jacket
If you're looking for a superb waterproof shell, but are looking for something comfortable and subtle in appearance, this is it.  This rain jacket is very unlike most rain jackets you've tried - it is not shiny, loud, or stiff. It's breathability is at the highest end of what's possible for a rain jacket. it's quiet when you walk, subtle in looks, and super stretchy. It moves with you, rather than either restricting you or being too bulky. This jacket excels spring/summer/fall with it's focus on breathability, slim fit and minimalist feature set, yet it can be used all year round.
While we love the Kinetic Plus, we worked with Rab to come up with a more minimalist version for our Massdrop members. What we've changed:
1) Removed the hand pockets, and replaced with a hidden zippered chest pocket. This saves weight and makes it pack down smaller, but perhaps more importantly is that it increases breathability. Every pocket means there is a double layer of fabric, which inhibits breathability. Also, hand pockets can be difficult to access when wearing a backpack or harness. Handily, the jacket packs into the chest pocket for easy carry.
2) Removed the velcro wrist closures. Again, saves weight and space, but also slightly increases breathability while removing a complexity we don't feel is necessary with a stretch shell.
3) New colorway of all-black for men and women, and the slate/salmon for men. Delivery Time: Right now, we're conservatively expecting an April 2018 delivery for this, which is perfect time for it's intended use. We're working to get that delivery date moved up meaningfully and I'll  periodically update you all throughout the production process.
A note on fit: Rab clothing is known for their athletic cut, with slightly longer torso and arms for unrestrained motion. This jacket is particularly slim, which works because the fabric is so danged stretchy. However, it is not designed for layering over much clothing. It should fit over a light to mid-weight baselayer, and that's about it. If you're looking for something to layer over a puffy jacket or just prefer a more relaxed fit, please size up
From Rab: "Our Slim Fit garments are designed to be worn closer to the body or over layers such as base-layers and light mid-layers. Close fitting for maximum performance when moving dynamically." https://rab.equipment/us/kinetic-plus-jacket

Hi Locus, I have a size 42 chest and have the original jacket in size L. It's VERY snug around the ole pecs. You should probably size up, especially if you want to wear anything other than just a compression under armour shirt underneath

Could someone please help me understand how this material compares with Goretex and eVent for breathability and water resistance? The numbers are difficult to interpret without comparative context. I get it that a stretchy outer surface is not common among those alternatives; is that the main advantage of this material? Thanks!

delnerdoHave a look at my reply to Danny. Despite what his misleading chart claims I am 99% sure this is far less breathable in the real-world than the high-end air permeable fabrics like eVent, Gore Pro and NeoShell. If you want a breathable jacket I can highly recommend eVent - although you need to keep it clean. And keep in mind, no fabric is "breathable" enough to keep you dry if you are sweating a lot or in a very humid climate.
Relative water resistance is not a thing to worry about on a rain jacket. All fabrics that are claimed to be "waterproof" are far more waterproof than they need to be for the real world. They must test at least 10,000mm (that's 10m of water pressure) on a water column to be called waterproof. Something that tests at 30,000mm is not going to keep you dryer than something that tests at merely 11,000mm. Breathability and durability are what differentiate WPB fabrics.

JoomyThis jacket is made of magic, but I had the same opinion as you before I actually wore it. I don't understand it but it IS waterproof.... And it IS amazingly breathable. I sweat REALLY easily so I sweat easily in pertex, gore-tex etc... But somehow I can wear this all day no problem.

Thanks for the introduction to the jacket and company, guys. I really really don't agree with the design decision here to chop out the hand pockets, so I went and picked up the original one from moosejaw with a 25% off coupon for $170. Worth the 20 dollar increase to gain the pockets back and have it ship tomorrow instead of in 9 months!

ribosradagastThat's great that you got the regular Kinetic Plus. Let us know how you like it after you've tested in out. As for the removal of hand pockets, it makes the jacket lighter and more breathable. Our two most popular UL rain shells are the Rab Flash Point and O.R. Helium II - and both have a simple chest pocket and no hand pockets. Our members love those jackets and have been asking us for the same thing but in a more breathable fabric, and ideally more comfortable and not as 'techy' looking. Our Massdrop x Rab Kinetic meets that demand.

DannyMilksHey Danny, my first impressions of the jacket are kinda iffy actually. The main concern I have with it is that hood... it has a big stretchy piece that seals against your noggin, but on me it's way too tight. Even after just a minute of wearing it, I've got a deep crease in my forehead where it digs into my flesh.
I'm exchanging it for a size up and we'll see if that helps with the hood sizing issue, though I kind of doubt it. Bummer though, because the fabric is pretty neat, it doesn't feel like a plastic bag at all. I'm surprised by how warm the jacket is for such a light layer as well.
As for the velcro wrist closures, I think they're pretty clutch. Same goes for the hand pockets. I plan on using it more as a casual jacket though, so maybe your improvements will be better for someone doing more technical hiking. I'll also say that your black is probably more attractive than the 3 colors they have it available elsewhere.

omegaohmit's extremely light. So it won't provide any insulation, but otherwise, its perfectly waterproof. If you've got a bib on, then little to no snow will go up your back. Should be fine on warmer days if you've got a base and mid layer.

....it says it's a collab with rab and massdrop...it's not the same jacket as anywhere else.
This was developed in collaboration with Rab so this specific style is only available on Massdrop. The inner is grey for both.

Danny, I live in Singapore (26-34 Celsius weather & 80+ % humidity) & would like to deploy the Kinetic as a biking rain-jacket for the ever present threat of a tropical storm/shower. Please let me know if the Kinetic was meant for such weather conditions & if so, is there any hope that shipping to Singapore is possible in this drop.

Thanks so much for the info. I'd say my situation is the same to the one you described, so then it's more of a question of how quickly things dry, how quickly I'm moving or whether I have warm enough gear. I have a friend who recently got knocked out of a race because of hypothermia. An amazing trick is to have a cheap one dollar poncho if you get freezing rain. Your wet underneath but your body heat gets trapped in with you. I need to ask him if he had one or if he just needed even warmer gear underneath. Paramo looks really interesting but the weight looks like a no go for my purposes where it's all about layering and de-layering most efficiently which is to say staying warm with the least amount of weight.

I have the kinetic Plus in the reddish colour which lives in my bag in case of rain (any time of year in Melbourne) ... But i really like the Massdrop version for the chest/stuff pocket. I hate that I have to carry a separate bag to stuff it in. I agree on the wrist Velcro, it's not something I am particularly keen on though I would've preferred elastic rather than nothing. Also appreciate the less conspicuous black.
In any case... Doesn't matter because AUSTRALIA. Aaaarrgghh!!!
Anyway, Let me add my voice to the rest of the Chorus on a few points though. A) I wear medium everything else. The medium looked good, but would not have allowed for any puffy layers and my muffin top is less obvious in the Large. Therefore... Size up! B) I love rain. On a particularly torrential day I left the office to do a couple of laps. The outer layer does wet out easily, but the inner layer kept me dry. Job well done! C) It is amazingly stretchy and breathable. I don't understand it. Must be magic. I've even used it to cover me AND an 20L backpack. D) The hood system is great. It won't come off. E) Pit zips. I don't say this lightly... I sweat super easily, but never felt like I needed them in this jacket.
MASSDROP/RAB... Please make a pants version!
Bee-Are-WhyThanks for the insight! A pant option is a cool idea!

kim.suarezOnly if you can make it available in Australia. :)
I wish this seemed more different from every other backpacking rain jacket out there. I want a jacket that's lightweight and truly waterproof for travel, but one without hand pockets is worthless to me.

Wow, this would be a no brainer for me if you haven't removed both pockets and Wrist straps. What is the purpose of a waterproof rating if rain slips through the sleeves? Then, what is this jacket for anyway if the waterproof of it is useless? You have removed key features to reduce the weight in 0,1% but killed the main purpose of it, so you have a jacket that is as lightweight as the original but excellent in nothing. Fortunately I found an even better deal on an original design Kinetic Plus jacket. Next year's Rab Kinetic Alpine is going to be awesome. I hope to see it here on massdrop, but please do not kill this future jacket too.

alfasI completely agree. I was about to pull the trigger, just based on it being a Rab Kinetic, but then I read the description. For me, removing the Velcro at the wrists is a no-go. Silly idea. Great looking jacket though, and I’ll just buy the Kinectic Plus elsewhere.

alfasI guess if that's a huge problem not having wrist straps yet you want this jacket for all its other strengths, you can by heavy colored rubber bands for the wrists and stash them in the chest pocket :)
