domcobb1If u take out the foams that are behind the grills you'll get much better highs, a wider soundstage, better 3D sound etc.
All u lose is a bit of bass but I personally didn't mind..

nhatlam96I personally will take the better bass response over highs any day. And I don't think removing the foam could void your warranty you're not affecting the internals in any way

The headphones are in the same condition as before just without the foam..

Mendy770I see you have posted this advice quite a few times around here. You should be aware that the foam is meant mainly to protect the inside of the driver from dust. If you remove the foam, you should cover the central hole in the magnet.
Also, from measurements, and from my listening as well, removing the foam doesn't make a big (if any) difference in sound. What does is the felt mod described on diyaudioheaven.

musikl1st of all, I tried it myself and seen a big difference so I don't know what you're talking about. 2nd, I heard this from more than one that the foam was added not for protection but rather bc of complaints that there's a lack of bass and this was added to increase bass (which it does) 3rd, if there's an issue with dust going inside than there should be an issue with the rest of the 6 line which DOESN'T have the foam protecting the inside!!

Mendy770I don't know what you've seen, I'm talking about what I heard :)
But if you want to see something, you should look at measurements with and without foam, they may help with placebo.
As for the rest of the series, they don't have the hole in the magnet, so no need for dust protection.

nhatlam96Well, I did remove the foam, the entire back grill actually, and didn't perceive any significant difference in sound. But since I found the headphone dark and muddy in sound, not suitable for what I wanted (I hoped for something flat, maybe closer to the hd600), I decided to do the felt mod described in https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com and now the sound is a lot more balanced, open, natural.
Of course, it's a matter of taste and what you want from your headphones.
And feel free to try removing the back grilles and listening with and without. It literally takes 2 minutes and doesn't affect the headphones in any way if you try it.

I don't care about charts,to me what makes the difference is how they sound and I'VE HEARD a difference, a big one. I don't know what you've heard but thays what my ears heard..

By placebo in this case I mean a subjective impression of an effect that isn't there. Google would've answered that, as well as the link question.

People who like the darker, bassy sound (not overly so, though) of the HD58x have no reason to do the mod, and they probably wouldn't like the result. For me, the original sound really didn't suit my purpose, but after modding them I'm very very happy with the result.

Regarding the mod that he writes (with the green stuff) I'm very curios to try it out, I personally never owned a sennheiser before so I don't know what a 650 or 660s sounds like but it looks like it'll sound better.
Ill update u if I notice a difference with or without the foam, if there is I guess ill just cover the hole..

musiklOk so I did a comparison with and without, now the thing which I noticed right away is that the soundstage without the foam is wider (which I personally like) 2nd, they sound a bit more Vail. I would say like a blanket covering it, a bit muddy but only slightly.
But otherwise it still sounds great.
It didn't sound as different as the first time, could be bc they weren't fully broken in but I'm not sure...
Either way,I'm very curios to try the modding that's meant to sound like the 660s

Mendy7701. I couldn't say for sure, I believe it's a bit better, but since I cannot do an instant comparison it is hard to say if it's improved or it's subjective.
2. To me they sound clearer and more natural after the mod, but this may be because it decreases the mid-bass a little (2-3dB) according to measurements. For me, before the mod, when playing piano, the sound was overly dark, missing clarity, it was muffled. After the mod, it sounded natural, clear and alive.
Something to keep in mind is that the thickness of the felt affects the bass decrease. Actually I haven't used felt, but some foam discs from a Superlux pair of headphones. Initially, the bass decrease was too abrupt and the sound ended up being too thin, missing body, which made it unnatural as well. So I experimented with the material until I liked the response.
Basically a material too dense/too thick will take away too much bass. A material that's too thin won't really make a difference.
You cut a ring of highly adhesive double-sided tape with a whole in the middle, just the shape of the magnet, you stick that on, and you add the coin-sized piece of felt (or whatever) and see if you like the result better or not.

PS (edit): Seeing how the majority of people around here are happy with the level of bass these have, the mod would probably make them sound thin to them. Personally I found them too dark, covering vocals before and lacking naturalness. So only mod if you feel the same. Otherwise there's no point.

2nd, when u say there's a lack of bass, you mean to say that there's no more normal "natural" bass or that there is enough bass remaining for music to sound good but just not as extending etc.??
3rd,if I don't like the results, is it easy to remove the mods and tape??

In summary, for anyone looking for a nice upgrade should definitely look at these. Phenomenal value at this price point.
(Only reason this is a 4 star review is my personal expectations were a little higher, but I think that speaks more to the quality of the M40x's)
Quick edit after having owned them for a little while: I am waiting on delivery of the Centrance DACport HD and while I can't confirm my suspicions quite yet, I think these will scale well with a decent amount of power. This isn't to say you can't drive these straight from onboard audio/phone, but the bass can go from quite punchy in certain songs to a tad lacking in others. This is NOT to say you need any sort of high end equipment to drive these. They will sound AMAZING with anything you plug them in to. Which after listening to more music I have to give this a 5 star rating. I in no way consider myself an audiophile and am more of an avid music listener/gamer. But the value of these are incredible for what you get. You aren't getting the HD 600, or a more analytical look at music. But if you're looking for a good pair of cans you can throw any music at and enjoy, these are your best budget pick.
