GUNGHOGunsThe 6XX is 4/5 stars for me, I can’t give this a 4 star if I think the 6XX is better. Sure price matters but this is no where near the 660s that some reviewers or even the marketing blurb has made this out to be. If you like the 58X more power to you but I just think there are better things out there around this price range.

KamranPersonally I think if you want something a little warmer (like the 58X) the AKG K550/553 is a pretty good pick (they‘re sometimes on sale for 150 from AKG direct), but they are closed back. If you just want good bass you can always get the Creative Aurvana Live for less than half of the 58X and then save up for something like an Emu-teak or TR-X00.

Mendy770Burn-in is a myth. QC should have done “burn-in” to ensure that what you get out of the box is exactly what they advertised. I never do burn-in unless explicitly stated by the manufacturer.

RuRRuRI think on the Massdrop X Cavalli amps Cavalli said to give them a 50 hour burn in and in the instruction manual of some Sivga headphones it says to give them a 300 hour burn in.

Ares78Different things need diffrerent burn in times. Most of the time, burn in time is by preference but it usually is as mich as possible.

Ares78Stop bullshitting bc that's simply not true!!! My headphones sounded MUCH better after full burn in!! I ordered these headphones 5 times for friends of mine that heard my pair and wanted one of there owns and I compared them to there's and it was pretty cool to see the difference.

Mendy770There’s usually a few reasons for this. Discrepancies between units of the same headphone (beyerdynamic and audeze are quite notable for this). Your ears adjusting to the sound. Specifically on Sennheisers, how worn in the pads are.

Wounded_AudiophileApples and oranges? The 6XX and 58X are literally meant to be in the same line of headphones, sharing the exact same chassis, and they're compared all the time. Discrepancy between both is $50. MSRP discrepancy of HD 800 to 58X is $1250 (25 times more than $50). When reviewers jump and say that 58X = 660S despite it being 2.5 times the price of 6XX, I bet you don't jump out and call these comparisons invalid.

And that's why i said apples to oranges when it comes to price. You can buy three jubilee's and still have 50 bucks left over to one 660 Remove the dampeners, cut the cloth and their the same headphone. I think his three star review is BS.

Ares78I own the AKG 553 and there is a huge difference between them and the 58X. It's almost like they are two different styles of headphones at different prices as well. Your review is what it is but your recommendation seems to be odd to me. Especially when you bring up discrepancies between units and the AKG 550 had similar issues. They are completely different in almost every way. The AKG 553 I have don't play well with poorly recorded music and actually sound distorted with some stuff. Maybe the distortion I'm hearing is the ringing I see mentioned in reviews. The Creative Aurvana is another one that is odd to recommend as something comparable. Sure it has decent, maybe good bass but everything else is average at best. Terrible build quality is my biggest issue and the sound is good for $60 but bad for $150. Just because they measure similar to the X00 doesn't mean they are even close. This type of recommendation is exactly how I have made so many bad purchases with headphones. For some reason you took an open pair of headphones and recommended nothing but closed backs. It sounds more like you prefer closed backs over open and trying to push others in that direction despite the short comings of your recommendations.

However, the HD58x do three things better than the HD6xx and because of these three things they deserve the high praise in my opinion. the three advantages are: - better firmer bass extension - 150 ohm/ high sensitivity which makes them fully useable with portable equipement (such as my iPhone and iPad Pro) without any headphone amp really needed and sounding great nevertheless - 25% cheaper than the HD6xx on its own, but a lot cheaper solution than the HD6xx if you factor in the headphone amp economy since it’s not needed To enjoy good portable sound. Don’t get me wrong: I generally prefer the HD6xx to the HD58x. Moreover, using a good headphone amp with DAC is always preferable, even with the HD58x, but the ability for the HD58x to provide an oustanding sound at a far better price (50$ less + no headphone amp to buy) while having a firmer more extended bass makes the HD58x an oustanding value. But they do not match the HD6xx´s reference mids and perfect timbre.

mrcrunch08I did also say the 6XX was better but it’s $50 more, I’d personally go for the 6XX over the 58X but some won’t. I bring up the K553/550 and CAL because they are my default recommendations for “warm” headphones 150 and under. I’m also just trying to tell people these aren’t HD660s and anyone who looks to buy these because they think they’re getting an HD660s should turn away.

Ares78You are right, the HD58x is not equal to the HD660S.... it’s actually a lot better in my opinion, and when you factor in the huge price difference, then the HD660S is left alone on the ground...

Ares78Thank you for that response. It makes a little more sense for me now. I do think we need to also consider the headphones use case. I'm not touching the hd660 stuff simply because I don't own them so I can't comment how they compare. I do own the 6xx and 600's and in a technical sense I agree with you. Despite thinking those are technically better I still like the 58x more simply because it plays with my collection of music better. I definitely agree people shouldn't buy these thinking they are 660's trashed up but feel they are being sold short comparing these to those other sub $150 headphones you mentioned. Regardless I appreciate your response.

HD6XX and HD58X are both 5 star products for what you are paying.
