Excellent Sound
Simply put, these sound nice -- crisp yet pleasant. The build quality is fine. Some people do not seem to like the glossy finish on the headband, but that is actually one of my favorite aspects of the build. It's not too shiny and has a soft look. I wish the ear cups were actually finished like that, though the two-tone black look is nice. The plastic seems sturdy; I've not disassembled them and will probably not modify the 58x in any way as they sound great the way they are. The supplied cable is a good length for desktop use. The stock ear pads are comfy and will probably become more so with time. The pads initially had a new car smell which is oddly pleasing; weird. Well, I cannot help compare these to the 4xx which I have been using quite a bit for the past month. Overall, I like the sound and build quality of the 4xx a little better. The 4xx sound more detailed and "open", and the bass and treble are more detailed; an overall more pleasant listen. The 4xx are heavier but I find them comfortable with their stock ear pads. The 58x do sound better to me than the 4xx when driven from my phone. I generally like to use headphones at my desktop with a DAC/AMP, though, and the 58x sound a bit nicer on an amp. The 58x has a high clamp force, but that was easily fixed by stretching the cups around the 58x box overnight. The 58x sound very nice, though, and I'm glad I bought them. I paid $170 and think that's a good price for how good these sound. My kids who are budding musicians will be the primary users, though I'm sure I'll "borrow" them every now and then. If I change my opinion after listening to the 58x longer, I'll update my review. For what it's worth, much of the music I listen to lately is synth which likely colors my impression. EDIT: Updated review from 4 to 5/5. Either the 58x or my ears completed "burn in"; fantastic.

eatkinolaAfter the burn do the 58x soundstage expand? Also do they outclass the 4xx after the burn in?

FaceSlam254xx still has the largest soundstage to my ears, and that's probably what you'll hear from other people. The 58x are a bit more comfortable to wear and have nice detail. Lately, I've been using a pair of HD600 which are not that far off (to me) from 58x. Although, all three sound great and I tend to like whichever one I get used to using for a time (if that makes sense). I've not A/B'd them, and if I did I would probably like whichever one I had been using more recently (totally non-scientific). I definitely don't need three pairs of headphones, but I will keep them all just the same! Hope this helps give some perspective; I'd be happy with any one of these headphones and have put my recent buying spree to an end.

eatkinolaThanks for answering my questions. I've been trying to decide between the 58x vs 4xx and still have no idea no matter how many reviews I watch.

FaceSlam25I know the feeling; poured over many reviews myself. Both sound excellent, maybe it comes down to build. The 4xx appears more rugged but there are reports of durability issues. The 58x has a bit of a cheap appearance to it but is very light, easier to wear for awhile, and is likely more durable. Good luck with your decision!
