This is a very interesting and quite clever move from Sennheiser to release this. It gives people a clear pathway to upgrade through all their new headphones. This is the entry level, its a great way to get a taste of the brighter version of the Sennheiser house sound. If you like it you can upgrade to the HD 660 S which is essentially this sound just better in every way. Finally you can reach the endgame at the HD 800 S which is pinnacle of the bright Sennheiser sound.
The really clever thing for them to do at this point is to make a HD 850 which would be the endgame version of the 650 sound. At the moment the 650/6xx is as good as you can get of the warmer, bassier side of the Senn sound. Making a 850 would give them a path people could go through to get two variations of the Sennheiser sound. Wouldnt need to be much different from the 800 actually, just would be a darker, more intimate version of the 800 s, with a nice subbass boost which is the thing most needing help on the 650.
HD650/6xx are my second favorite Senn, my first and endgame is the HD800 S
You could get the 850 in the form of OPPO PM-1, in my opinion. Same sound signature as HD650, but significantly better in every way.
