I was having a hard time deciding on a second pair of headphones, and this new one made it even harder! I'm trying to decide between this HD58x, the HD6xx, Hifiman HE4xx and the AKG K7xx.
What music do you listen to the most? What sound signature are you looking for? Will you be using a headphone amp?
- I listen to mostly (classic) rock (60s to 90s) and music with vocals. No electronic music or something.
- I want a natural and accurate sound, if it was between warm and bright, I'd say roughly in the middle of the two, but a bit more to the warm side.
- I have a basic DAC/amp combo (SMSL M3) which supports high impedances, so that's not an issue.
I currently own the Audio Technica ATH-M40X and I like the neutral and accurate way that produces sound.
Thanks for thinking along with me.
Personally I think its between the HD6xx and HE4xx. I have all but the HD58x of course. The 6xx is going to be warmer and a little more laid back as we all have read and its true, but its also full and smooth. The 4xx will have a little more top end treble energy and be a tad more resolving and "clear" but at times have a little grain but relatively smooth, it sounds quicker as well. I use the Grace m9xx and o2 and 4xx sounds great out of the m9xx. I use a Little Dot mkIII with some EH and voskod tubes for the senns and the otl really brings the best out of my 650's and 6xx's. I think you will be happy with either. I would get both if you can. They are a steal at these prices. But ultimately I think everyone should own a pair of 650's (6xx). You will definitely fair better with more mW's especially on the 6xx though. A OTL amp would be Ideal for 6xx. Keep in mind these are just my opinions and observations. I consider myself just an average enthusiast. Also I listen to a lot of electronic music but more avant garde and experimental ambient and acoustic stuff as well jazz, neo classical and some prog rock and metal all sorts. yes I had my coffee.
Thanks a bunch. This really helped me. I'm still not 100% done with deciding but again, you've been a great help!
I haven't heard these, obviously, but I own or have listened to the other three. Given the quality of this group, I think you're better off approaching the decision from a use case scenario. Since all are open back, none are going to really be at their best in a mobile scenario. So, considering how you listen in your "home base(s)" would be the place to start. If you're typically moving around with headphones plugged into your phone, the 58x will probably have an edge. Their design really seems to be aimed at that scenario, and I'd bet on them outperforming their price tag. If you're a sit down, plug into the amp and chill type, then it really becomes a budget decision between the 4xx and the 6xx. A good bit of my listening is in those same genres, and if pressed, I'd say 6xx, but I'm admittedly Sennheiser biased. I've been really impressed by the 4xx, for $30 less. If you spend the $200, I'd go 6xx over the 7xx.
I joined the HD6xx drop. It's very unfortunate that it ships so late (end of march) but I'll remain patient. There'll be some import taxes (about 50 euros in total which is roughly 60 USD) which is pretty significant. However, a new pair of 650's still costs way more than that so it was a good deal nonetheless.
Congrats, I think you'll be happy. I had to wait four months for mine (and they came ahead of schedule) but it was absolutely worth the wait.
That's good to hear. This'll be my first step into real hi-fi sound so I'm excited!
