How these two perform without amp? I'm new to audiophile, which currently do not own any amp.
My HD6xx sound fine straight to my Ipod and PC, but sound a lot better with a dedicated amp/DAC. Everyone's hearing is different and some people will use this without buying anything extra like an amp, and some won't touch headphones without an dedicated amp.
HD6XX are the better headphones but if you don't have an amp I would go for the HD58X's. The thing is if you get right into it and purchase a DAC, amp, etc, you are not going to stop at one pair of headphones anyway.
I have the TH-X00. If I consider those as punchy and energetic, would these be more lush and laidback? I do have a tube amp and would love to have the HD-6XX as a complement to the TH-X00. However I prefer the TH-X00 through a solid state amp than a tube one. Running them through some vintage tubes makes them too much at the low end.
1 week with the HD58x and you'll consider your X00 harsh and unlistenable. Anyway, expect a pretty neutral presentation with much leaner bass compared to the X00 and forward vocals. However it is a great complement for sure, for 150$ you can't go wrong with this. I do use solid-state amp for my listening and my experience is based on that so YMMV.
What sort of tube amp do you have? An OTL amp like a Dark Voice, would probably work better with the higher impedance of the 6XX's. However if your amp has an Output Transformer or if it's a Hybrid amp then it probably won't matter either way . The tubes my also take the edge off the brighter sound of the 58x.
I've just got the He4XXs plus a pair of Senns PXC 550's in the last month so I think I've used up my headphone quota for a while. I have to admit I am very tempted by these at $150 US. However I'll probably hold off and wait for another 6XX drop some time next year.
It looks like the HD-6xx series now runs the whole gamut of the sound frequency.
Bright- HD 660
Bright - HD 58x
Neutral - HD 600
Warm - HD 650
Is this right?
Im using an old LD MK3. So technically HD 6xx will work better. But I’m looking to getting a better tube amp, so its either OTL or transformer coupled depending on the headphones I have and vice versa.
If your current amp is a Little Dot and you are looking at upgrading, go for the 6XX's.
660 and 600 are very very similar, but the 660S is more transparent and slightly brighter. Still a neutral headphone.
I’m looking to get the ld mk3... how do you rate it? What makes you want to get something better?
It’s a good if it is your first amp. I must have gotten it nearly 8 years ago. Back then, the LD MK3 and the Dark Voice were the 2 most popular budget tube amp. For most part, the amp sounds warm. Rolling the drive tubes will improve the treble and bass impact somewhat.
