I'm upset I missed the initial drop on the 6XX's, I'm definitely NOT missing the initial drop this time. Thanks for the side by side!
You're welcome! Yeah, this is a pretty good deal. I think you could do a blind test, picking up and putting on each unit, and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference, fit-wise. And the sound profiles are pretty close. If you look at those graphs, they've got all the same hills and valleys; the variations could be considered within a margin of error.
I saw! Maybe it's the newer drivers/tech on the 58X allowing them to perform so well? Who knows. Also, since you've got a pair, are the drivers more like the old 580's or more like the newer 660s? The page is a bit unclear as to driver size, etc. since they say it's the same driver sizes but more sensitive.
My understanding is that the driver is similar to the 660S, though slightly smaller. The design goal is for it to be clearer and more lively than the previous entries, with a lower impedance, so it's not as important to use a separate amp (though it is suggested these will still benefit from such ).
How is bass compared to HD650?
Compared to the HD 6XX (just to be specific), they're pretty close. None of these are headphones for "bass-heads." If I'm using the HD 6XXs with a DAC/Amp combo connected to my MBP, I'm likely to use Audio Hijack, and pass the signal through the EQ and pump the bass up a couple dB. For the HD 58X, I'd run them with Boom2, or even a little of the iTunes native EQ to step up the thump. However, listening to something like Phillip Glass' "Koyaanasqatsi" with them, the clarity they provide to the bass is amazing.
Thank you basically confirmed my choice in getting 58x instead of 6xx, which I've read can sound sloppy and veiled sometimes... Can you please confirm of deny wider soundstage in 58x? Also how's detail retrival in these? Coming from 598 hope to get on the next level of audiophile experience :)
Well, I've never felt either one to be sloppy or veiled, but such things can be very subjective. The soundstage is really very similar. I mean, the size, structure, and materials going into the ear cups is exactly the same, as far as I can tell. You get the same exposure to the outside world, and same effect on the sound coming from the drivers.
