How important is it to get an amp for these? Thanks in advance for any advice!

You will not NEED an amp for these. Since these are 150 Ohm drivers, and not 300 like the HD6XX and many other headphones, these are not as hard to drive as all the other ones. A good tube amp will certainly give you some more "juice on the wire", but you can drive them fine using just a regular smartphone. Hope this was helpful.

You may be able to get suitable volume out of the HD58X without an amp, but even my Porta Pros sound better with an amp. In the case of my 300 ohm HD600's and HD650's vs my 150 ohm HD660S there is not a huge volume boost when switching to the lower impedance cans. It's also important to consider that power isn't just about volume; it's also about control. More available dynamic power can really clean up the sound.

If you want to hear the headphones at their potential I would suggest a good amp/dac combo. I've NEVER heard a phone do a pair of headphones justice other than budget iems which don't require much juice and can be voiced to match cheaper sources like smartphones.
