I have HD 598's and am wondering if this would be a significant improvement, or diminishing returns. I love the soundstage of the 598's and I am not a basshead, so I'm ok with the bass. But now we have these and the 6xx, and I cannot decide between the 2?? Are the 6x x worth the extra $50? I listen to classic rock, metal, and about the softest i get would be the Fleetwood Mac - Rumours album. I LOVE me some Stevie Nicks and the production on that record is AMAZING . Also besides listening through a DAC/Amp combo, I'll be listening through my Marantz NR1508 Receiver sometimes, and I've heard this can make a difference. Any info would be appreciated.
I haven't heard the 58x, but I do own both the 598 and 6xx. I miss the comfort (light weight/low clamp) and wide soundstage of the 598 when I listen to the 6xx, but that's it. I haven't used my 598s for anything but gaming, since receiving the 6xx. The 6xx are noticeably more detailed and (as a musician) much more tonally accurate in ways that I find too hard to give up. So thumbs up as a clear, worthwhile upgrade. I drive them from a vintage Marantz stereo receiver or a Fulla 2 - I've never tried the 6xx with an AV receiver, but my experiences with the 598s and zmf classics on an old onkyo were not engaging.
If the money isn't burning a hole in your pocket, I'd wait to see how the 58x pan out for rock/metal - they may tilt better that way than the 6xx . I do consider them somewhat warm/dark. Still, I'm very happy with my upgrade to 6xx, and I have a more common frame of reference to every other headphone being made.
Hope that helps.
Absolutely helps bro. Thanks for taking the time and your opinion.
this is from the European division, the the 598s are cheapo Chinese junk.
Mine are old, iirc , they said Made in Ireland. I have the old open backs, the UGLY tan colored with the burl wood accents. If they are made there, the group of China men that made mine are the shizzle, my nizzle.
Sennheiser controls the quality. Doesn't matter where it is made.
YaBoyRob is correct about the soundstage difference and detail. I have both and the 6XX has more bass for sure. They are also harder to drive. I would imagine that the 6XX would benefit from a higher quality amp than I have currently. The 598 sounds pretty great on something like a Audioquest Dragonfly or an Audioengine D3 (I prefer the D3). I look forward to listening to the 58X.
