These are by far the cheapest feeling headphones I own. I can’t honestly believe these are Sennheiser’s let alone a Massdrop Collab. If I got these off eBay I would 100% think they are fake Senns. The Hi-Fi man Planar is much better build quality and sound imho. Too bad I can’t return them.

CokemanNot a power issue. The plastic just feels cheap. The sound is fine. But I prefer the hifi sound as well.

BPcruisebut hifiman planar do you mean the he-4xx if so i don't agree, as i found that headphone to have to much hiss and a overall boxy sound. Now i haven't received my hd58x but i don't expect it to be much different to the hd6xx in build quality as its only 50 dollars cheaper and if yours is then i find that a bit strange, sennheiser would of tested these themselves and were happy with the results, it would surprise me greatly if they put out a headphone that was terrible, as its only damaging their own name, that and every other review i've seen of the production hd58x (non reproduction) was positive. That is why i asked if your pair was faulty.
edit i just noticed you said the sound is fine, but prefer the hifi sound, thats fair enough thats why we play this game right. on a side note about the plastic i've never felt the material sennheiser used were particular high quality even on my hd650 not hd6xx, the plastic is kind of average, but i've used them for 3 years now and nothing has broken, and the sheer convenience when it comes to placing and removing parts.

BPcruisewoah i wasn't saying you were wrong, i fully respect what you said, they probably did use a cheap plastic, but how does it sound, not comparing to other headphones.

alvarg I don’t really approach my thoughts on a quality product by selecting a singular element. It sounds fine, like I said. Not blowing me away. I will say the O2 headphone amp is not even close to enough power, thus someone using only a phone or tablet would probably find them lacking.

BPcruiseYou are using fairly cheap Amps. If these are anything like the rest of this series they scale extremely well, where planars don’t tend to scale nearly as well as long as they have sufficient power.
BPcruisedont compare planar to dynamic. are u wanting to sell the 4xx?

CokemanThose are just a couple amps like I said. Running a lot of high end gear not from md. Anyways. shouldn’t need to also purchase/own a Ferrari engine to put into a Gremlin.

BPcruiseAnd to circle back - sound quality wasn’t my point. I’m not trying to get into that, my ears like what they like. Build quality is what I’m looking at and they feel cheap af. The end. My opinion. Look at the photos and do what you want with your own opinion and money.

BPcruiseAlmost every review of the HD580s and all 6 Series imediately make a statement that they feel cheap but I bought my original 580s in 94 and had the same feeling but I gave them away last year and they still were not cracked or broke . What headphone have you ever known to last 25 plus years ? And every one in this series are made identical other than driver or color and I have yet to hear of one breaking I will get rid of the three I have now by leaving them to grandchildren because I have found them bullet proof

alvargMy thing is, if you need a High end amp for an entry level headphone, the amp is maybe doing a lot of the work to make them shine.

BPcruiseMost headphones the Amp is making them shine. Take Koss KSC75s and plug them into your phone. They sound terrible. Plug them into a good DAC/Amp and they are amazing.

Cokemanright The amp is the cornerstone, but you sell an entry level headphone to people and then tell them. No it’s good. Just upgrade your amps. That’s silly. They shouldn’t be buying these if That’s the Case. And if they are that good they shouldn’t feel and look like a Chinese knockoff plugging into my 1k amps.

Cokeman Man. All the senns ive has before look like they were made in Germany. This is not what I was expecting at all.

BPcruiseThey are similar to the HD650. The glossy paint on the 650 is thicker than the semigloss paint on the 58XJ, and the 58XJ has no glossy paint on the pad surround, or lower ring.
But both have obvious seams and imperfect edges. I'd say the mould used on my 58XJ was more worn than the one used on my 650. They both feel solid, don't creak or rattle much.
My 58XJs are better finished than my 1998 HD600s with less obvious plastic seams, and my HD600s are still going strong with no signs of cracks or breaks. I've dropped them countless times.

BPcruiseI'd describe these complaints as finish quality more than build quality. Comparing these to the 4XX, the Hifimans have nicer paint, and the metal gimbals. But their build quality is arguably lower - you can press on the 2.5mm connector and cut out a channel! Some people found lots of glue on their planar drivers. The Senn Momentums, HD700, HD8xx are an obvious step up in finish quality with nicer feeling materials, leather, metal, better paint and printing etc. But you pay for this as well. Overall build quality is hard to compare, both are pretty good IMO. The HD5x9 and 5x8 series arguably use nicer feeling materials and paints, have more detailed moulds and generally benefit from >10 years of improvements in mould making. But both of those series use weaker plastics, less sturdy headband adjustments, less sturdy earcup atachments, and have been known to break down over time with cracking, pleather flaking etc. Whereas the 58x/6xx series' use carbon-fibre impregnated plastics, and the only issues in 20 years have been connector springs (fixed since mid-2000s and Senn offered free replacements), and the headband snapping, which is typically only when people try to bend it. This headphone range has over 20 years of history, I've personally had one of these pairs for over a decade, and can wholeheartedly vouch for their build quality.

spronkall it has to do is house the drivers, if it does the job and doesn't break to easily (which they don't) then i don't care how cheap of a material sennheiser uses to cut costs while maintain the audio quality, i've bought expensive headphones that have that premium finish and you just get paranoid about dropping them, scratching them, plus they generally aren't easy to change parts on, while sennheisers 600 series is very easy to swap parts on.
