View Full Discussion I have the 6XX and 58X on hand to compare. I initially had the same worry I've seen @Cokeman express about the midbass, but I like it! They make genres such as electronic and hip hop fun to listen to, which is a huge issue I have with the 6XX; a friend described the 6XX as what he imagines an engineer meant the song to sound like. However, because the bass extends down further with the 58X and remains tight, the bass bump doesn't come out muddy or overdone. Maybe I'll grow to dislike it but those are my initial impressions. The imaging didn't seem as good on the 58X but after A/Bing them, it's pretty much there. You can really tell how much easier the 58X is to drive vs the 6XX. I didn't even like the 6XX until I paired it with a CTH, whereas the 58X sounds good out of all my sources (while benefiting from amping, just not the same gains you see with a 650/6XX).
I have a lot of headphones to get rid of at the moment...
edit: Wanted to clarify that these headphones have more in common than not. The 6XX seems to be objectively better, but only ever so slightly. The 58X on the other hand is just way more enjoyable and easy to listen to in my opinion. I haven't pulled out my 6XX much since I got my Elex, but I put the Elex away to spend some time with the 58X.
There is definitely a 5k peak that I don't hear on the 6XX. The mids sound smooth through to the treble on the 6XX, with the mids always having been the strong suit of the 650/6XX.
Does the CTH change the sound on the 58X? I'm thinking about getting one but fear it will make the 58X sound overly warm.
i need to trim the herd as well. thanks for the reminder.
Not really. I feel like the CTH really opened up the 6XX for me vs my DACport, but the 58X doesn't get quite as much out of it.
So you recommend getting these over the 6xx then right? I was thinking of waiting for the 6xx drop again since I missed it but if this is just as good then no point in waiting irght?
Depends. When you get down to it, these are different flavors of the same thing.
-better bass extension
-easier to drive
-notoriously difficult to drive
Could you explain what you mean by a 5k peak?
