These observations should be regarded as preliminary, I've only put a few hours on these phones and there will be some changes with break-in. (Don't get me started!)
Short version: best 150 dollar phones I've owned. I've liked Senn's since I first heard them. Had AKG 240's long ago, tried the cheapest Senn's I could find and it was a revalation.
Since then I've had top Grado's, Koss stat's, etc. Most recently, AKG 701 (Austrian) so I'll compare to them.
The 701's (so far) have a larger stage with more air. The 58X are richer, more present and intimate. By comparison, the 701's are more "uptilted" in tonal balance, more harsh in the highs and leaner in the bass.
The 58X are not yet as detailed and probably won't be but I do hear them opening up to become more airy and the resolution and decay continues to improve.
Anyway, I'm really liking them and I don't see how anyone would be disappointed. I won't be surprised if I end up preferring these to the more expensive AKG.
