I'm going to be driving my HD 58X's with my onboard audio card at first, but wanted to know from the guys who already got theirs will something like a Schiit Fulla 2 be noticeably better than my current MB audio
Fulla 2 drives these to nice volume levels, but bass levels aren't as good when compared to running them on my Jotunheim (especially when run off of the balanced end of the Jot).
I can't justify spending more than double the cost of my headphones on a dac/amp. I have heard that it's a bad ass dac/amp though.
I am looking at the FiiO E10K also. Any suggestions would be great.
If non-portable option is fine, I'd buy Sound BlasterX AE-5. I have it and Massdrop O2 amp. Massdrop O2 amp is collecting dust though because the AE-5 headphone amp is noticeably better (I did some measurements to check and indeed, AE-5 was miles ahead in dynamic range and stereo crosstalk).
That's only because these headphones are priced so outstandingly low.
That’s the wrong way to look at it. Say you have 7 headphones.....that one AMP/DAC will all. It’s must like tires on a vehicle. You can’t be ok with spending $$$$ on the engine and some nice interior enhancements but then not want to spend a penny on tires. They are vital. Just like an amp and a DAC are vital to your headphones reaching their potential.
In your tire analogy, it would be akin to going from average tires to performance tires. It doesn’t make much sense to use performance tires for most people in average conditions. If you’re listening to a basic quality source, so long as the headphones are properly driven, it won’t make a huge difference how high end your DAC/Amp is/are. If whatever the headphones are plugged into don’t have sufficient drive, then an amp becomes a necessity and not a luxury, of course.
