View Full Discussion Was somewhat disappointed by these headphones when I first took them for a spin. However, I noticed the foam behind the grills that was not present in my hybrid HD600/650 or the early press images of the HD58X. I removed the foam and wow what a difference, this is the Sennheiser sound I loved in my HD650. Bass is slightly reduced and the highs are opened way up. Of course they are a bit more open now as well. I suspect this is how they were originally designed but the foam was added when massdrop requested more bass and less highs. Not to mention I quite like the look of visible drivers.
HD58X Foam Removed

How do you get the grill off? Would like to try doing this to mine.
Thanks didn't know if it was the same as the 650s
Spent a week or 10 days with them with the foam. As soon as I Took it off they sound much better. Thanks for the tip. I didn't notice any bass loss, but I don't listen to much bass heavy music. The drums in my metal music sound just as punchy as they did before, It just cleaned up the vocals a lot. Probably going to toss that foam out, was planning on keeping it just in case I wanted to go back.
Side note to anyone reading this they look better in my opinion too because you can actually see the driver now.
But i think dust can go in now? So...
Not an issue that i have herd of from HD600, 650, 660s, 6XX owners they all have no foam there.
Nice little tip to know in case i wanna do it in the future. Thanks!
I just removed my foam and OMG it sounds awsome!!
The difference in sound quality is night and day!!
Thank you very much t3xasoutlaw!!!
Thank u for the advice,I just have one question. Did you take out the foam for the inside of the headphones as well or just the outside ones that are close to the grill??
There isn't foam on the back of these drivers like there was on the older 600/650. Only foam is the stuff right inside the metal outer grill
Thank Dj1001 He's the one who got me to do it.
There is 2 places where there's foam in the inside touching the ears and Evan more inside behind the drivers, now what I was asking you is did u take out both sets of foam or just the foam that behind the drivers close to the grill??
Only the foam behind the grill.
Did this last night and they definitely sound way better. I also own the 650's and there was something missing when the foam was in, after taking them out they sound amazing, much more like the 650's sound which I personally love. Thank you!
Certainly sounds much open and airy!
Removing foam does nothing.
Who cares what a graph sheet says when it ACTUALLY sounds different??
I saw this graph sheet before, it means nothing to me..
Because graphs aren't biased. Unless you had one with foam and one with out and did a blind test theres no unbiased response. You took something out, logic says it was capping, now that its removed theres less bass, more air, and soundstage (similar to closed vs open back headphones). I made the changes, didnt believe there would be a difference, and didnt hear one. I took the foam bits that i took out and placed them against the grill on the outside and went back and forth, i hear no difference at all.
Well I don't know what to tell u bc I own the hd 58x and when I take out the foams, the soundstage widens And things sound less muffled and there's more instrument separation..
Placebo effect if you ask me, I have mine off for aesthetics, thats it.
Btw, I don't know if graph sheets tell u if there's a wider soundstage or not, bc without the foams, it's not looks there's a difference in the actual sound (mids, lows, highs) it's just that things sound more separate and open/ wide and a bit less muddy.
I don't believe a graph would show that, but I still fully believe placebo effect is the case for any difference anything thinks is going on. Like I said, you would need a blind test to truly determine anything.
I hear ya, but I'm still sure that I would tell a difference..
Maybe I'll try and tell u
Just tried this out. Super easy to take out and put back in.
That being said... this is all placebo. There really isn't any change. Keep the foam in there for comfort and protection of the driver.
Comfort? What foam are you taking out?
Thanks for sharing graph.
