I also own the 6XXs and I would rather listen to these everytime... more low end punch and not as shrill on the high end. The 58Xs are definitely cheaper feeling in every way, including build quality. But they just sound better to me. Just an amazing pair of headphones for the price. Highly recommended.

But the mids on the 6XX tho...
Compared to the 6XX don't the 58X mids sound horrible?

Honestly, the mids aren't as good from the 58X as compared to the 6XX... but (to me) the 58X's low end punch and the more pleasing highs make up for their lack of the traditional "Sennheiser veil" and emphasis on the midrange. The 58X is a different animal- if someone prefers the traditional Sennheiser sound, they may want to invest in the 6XX (and it's a wonderful set of headphones), but I just enjoy the 58X sound more.

That's interesting you say that the highs on the 6xxs are shrill. From my experience, it's a bit subdued. Does that mean the 58X's are darker?

You sure it's not a honeymoon period? I always enjoy new headphones more. It's psychologically biased.
Any chance you'll change your mind and return to the HD6XX once the honeymoon is over?

It's entirely possible and cannot rule that out. However, when I put on the 58Xs, I really enjoy the various genres of my music collection. When I then listened to the 6XXs, I still enjoyed them... but mainly for specific music (anything more analytical sounding, or needing to be crystal clear). I personally prefer listening to the 58Xs for extended sessions. As a bonus, the 58Xs also play through a laptop or smartphone without the need for additional amplification... which is great for casual listening. I think the 58Xs are perfect for exactly that- the casual listener who really wants a step up in sound quality (compared to more basic, cheaper headphones). They are definitely NOT the best cans I've ever listened to, but they are just smoother in almost every way compared to the 6XXs. But that's just my opinion, and others will like/love the sound of the 6XXs more. Glad Sennheiser makes options for all of us!

I agree with everything you said except your conclusion! They are both great though.
