Could anyone explain the differences between the HE 4XX and the Hd58X?
HE4XX are planars and 58X are dynamic drivers. HE4XX play really flat aka clinical where the 58X have a nice bump in the bass and treble regions. HE4XX are harder to drive without an amp.
In short, The 4XX is more dynamic (difference in soft and loud sounds) and faster (transients) than the 58X. The 4XX also has the bigger soundstage but not by a great degree. They are also brighter.
The 58X are "smoother" by comparison to the 4XX as the HiFiMan has some pretty large peaks in the high end. While they are bright and fast by some of the other Sennheiser standards, they are behind the HiFiMan in this regard. They do have the better bass impact (not basshead levels by any means) but I think they both have equal bass extension.
What you'll like more will come down to preference: the brighter more energetic 4XX or the more mid-centric 58X with more impact in the low-end?
