I've got some serious first world problems going on here. I'm having a tough time deciding between the 58X and 7XX. I own the 6XX and love them but am thinking of getting something else--because headphones. Should I just get the 58X since I know I like the Sennheiser sound, or try and broaden my horizons with something like the 7XX or even some DT990?

TreeFrogsEverything I've read points to the 58x and the 6xx sounding incredibly similar. TBH I'd save my money and go for a much bigger upgrade like a good pair of planars.

TreeFrogsI was in a similar situation and decided to pick them up. Honestly it's probably not worth it, they are extremely similar. A little less detail on the 58x with a bit more bass. Only reason I may consider keeping the 58x as well is that it's a lot easier to drive from my G7, but I'm considering listing mine and investing the cash elsewhere.

TreeFrogsFor the last 8 years I have loved the HD650. I never thought I would ever find something that could replace them as my favourite headpohone, but I fell short in a couple of areas. The HD58x fixed the bass extension, and the bass is tighter. The imaging is on another level compared to the HD6xx. They're much better for gaming. I'm seriously planning on selling my HD6xx's and DT770s. This is the one headphone to rule them all, great for movies, all genres of music and gaming.
What I don't understand is why Massdrop and Sennheiser is selling these for so cheap, I would easily pay $200 like the HD6xx. I'm surprised Sennheiser isn't putting these into full production.

TreeFrogsThat would be a hard decision for sure as all three are good headphones. It depends on what you want because all three you mention sound different yet great in their own right. I own all three and can share my impressions as follows: Very satisfying natural response with very good imaging, HD58X. Does everything good. Also, very comfortable. For a large airy sound-stage and micro detail especially in the high end, DT990. Also comfortable due to being very light weight. I still prefer HD58X comfort in spite of strong clamping force due to oval ear pad as opposed to DT990's round ear pad. The 7XX has a warmer and more distant overall signature yet manages to have a wide sound stage. Works very well for movies. To me, these are not quite as comfortable as the other two as the round ear pads are memory foam and feel slightly harder. If you will have just one headphone, I would go with the HD58X as they are more versatile.
TreeFrogsI don't think that getting an additional pair of Senns that sound very similar falls into "broadening horizons", so maybe try something completely different.
I've got the 6XX too and decided to go planar magnetic for the next pair.

Lurr17be sure to put at least 100-150 hours of burn-in on the HD58X as this headphone becomes more balanced sounding as the treble detail opens up.

MuadIf I'm not mistaken this is the first run of the 58x's and subsequent drops will be more expensive according to MD

This is not the first run, and the price has remained constant at 150.

domcobb1I'm surprised at how it can be true that the 6xx and 58x are nearly identical. I don't care what the frequency response charts show, they don't sound that similar to me. These two cans are a perfect illustration of how charts don't tell you the whole story. I didn't understand what people meant when they said that the 6xx had the "Sennheiser Veil" until I listened to the 58x. Shortly after, I sold my 6xx's. There were some things I preferred the 6xx for, but I found the 58x to be better as an all arounder. Partially that has to be because I didn't have the kind of gear to properly drive a 6xx, but even if I could realize the full potential of the 6xx, I think I'd still like the 58x better because I can have it anywhere and it'll sound great! What good is sublime sound when it's not available to you when you want it?
