I was convinced after watching HardwareCanucks that these were worth buying instead of the hd 6xx. This was also decided by my impatience and the lack of a drop at the time of buying these. And oh boy do they sound great! Comparing these to my hd 598's these have more bass and less mids but it still sounds utterly fantastic. There is a lovely low end growl that the 598 just can't reproduce. They are driven pretty well by my pixel xl but do get slightly better with my magni 3. I do find that the 598's seem to sound better in classical music and give me more of a feeling like I'm there listening to the instruments in person and they push vocals more forward. In O holy night with john williams, the 598 give this nice full sound stage with the organ reaching deep into its bass and the voices all blending together while holding their own unique sound signature. By comparison these sound like some of the voices are overlapping in frequency and sound like some of the sine waves are amped while some are cancelled. Now that's probably how it actually is but classical and vocal tracks sound better on the 598 imo (since burn in the 58x have become better than the 598 in every aspect with O Holy Night being sublime with none of the overlap I previously mentioned). For everything else, these are utterly sublime. They pull out details that I had never heard of in tracks before. A wonderful track that I like to listen to for smaller details is Odesza's A Moment Apart. There is this musicality and depth to it that the 598 miss the mark on, my edc3 make it sound flat, and my clouds just muddy.
Out of the box the clamping pressure was wayyyyyy too high which I was kind of expecting given other reviews. Now two or three weeks later with use everyday, they feel much more comfortable. I wish that they had stuck with the hd600 headband with the four lumps because if I put these on in just the wrong way they are slightly uncomfortable on the top of my head. Other than that these feel fantastic. Their earcups are a bit shallow but the soft thicker foam on the inside of the earcup makes this a non issue for me. On the subject of this, the earpads aren't as soft as the 598's but they're definitely not distracting. They breathe well and are just soft enough to feel pleasant. Not like beyerdynamics good earpads but definitely good enough. Give these a little bit of playback to "burn in" as after this period they become a lot more natural sounding and the weird mid recession goes away.
Definitely recommended if you want to get into hifi. I loved them so much I decided to get the 6xx as well as a complimentary pair. Just watch out because headphones this good are the start of the rabbits hole.
EDIT: I have now tried the mod where you remove the foam from inside the back of the earcup and if this is truly what an hd660s sounds like, just wow. I can't bring myself to put them back in. The bass is more laid back with more natural extension, the highs go up further without being any more sharp or fatiguing. And either due to the highs reaching further up or since it is technically more open, the sound stage is even wider. Love love love these after this. I definitely recommend trying this mod if you have the 5 seconds it takes. out of curiosity I might put the foam into my 6xx when they arrive though I suspect that that may not alter them in a great way.
Hmmmmmm🤔 I was too lazy at first but this seems like something I might do. Was it very difficult? I'm a bit of a novice to modding headphones.
Alright I may do that if I have any money left after the koss esp/95x drop since that looks very tempting. X)
Nonsense. I only listen to classical music and the HD58X blows the HD598 away in absolutely every aspect except soundstage.
I totally agree. I think I edited it to say that I preferred the 58x after burn in. Just pre burn in they sound a little weird and less natural. 😂
